Hi!
The handle on my bike for the back brake has broken and I need to replace it. I’ve found a replacement on eBay, but when I sent a message to a local bike shop to ask if they can fit it, they said any brake handles will do, is this right? Or do they have to be specific for an electric bike? He said it’s just the cable that’s special?
I have no reason to doubt him, I just want to check with people here first

have you broken the brake lever or has the cable snapped?

It's a standard Chinese ebrake. What's sort of important is the electric cable and connector if you want to replace the whole thing. In which case, you need to show us what you have. Does it plug in to a connector near the handlebars or does it run all the way down the frame to the box under the battery? You can replace the whole lot with any non-electric bike brake if the brake on the other side has an electric cable because you only need one brake with the switch.

If it's just the lever that's broken, the cable doesn't matter. You just need a lever that matches the rest of the assembly. Still, we need photos of what you have to be able to make recommendations.

Edit: Can you unplug the connector and show us what it is?

Show a photo of the whole lever on the other side.

The brake lever is very common. You can find them on Ebay, but I've never seen that connector before in 10 years of working with ebikes. I'd be surprised if you could get that from anywhere other than the manufacturer of the bike or one of their agents

The above one, like most, doesn't have the connector, but that's no problem. You just cut the connector off the old one kalf-way down between the lever and the connector, cut the new cable to suit and join the wires. If you can't solder, it would be OK to twist them and insulate with heatshrink tubing.

So the bike shop guy was wrong? I do need a special one?

that’s fine, I’ll buy that and give it to him

It's more expensive than the one I showed you and it's out of stock. Why have you chosen that one?
I need it fairly quickly as I need to get the bike back on the road ASAP, also when I linked it there were 2 in stock
