The extent of the power issues in my area: my Denon amp threw a momentary wobbly fit. House roof tiles are still on, but I'd need a drone to be sure... or heavy rain.

I see tomorrow's headlines are dominated by HMQ continuing to do light duties despite Covid.
They are desperate to get her alive to 100 years old.

Her mother made it to 104, Prince Philip almost got there with intensive medical care, being only a few months short of 100 when he expired.

Great for the tourism industry if the Queen makes the magic figure, uniquely the royal family who live to a century old.

Might have to adopt the Lenin approach if she doesn't.

That might depend on royalty continuing, I'm not confident it will. The institution has been increasing prone to shaky moments harming their popularity. From the abdication of Edward VIII and the inspid George VI on the throne. The mentally strange Princess Margaret. The doomed marriage of the Dozy Diana to Charles. The strange behaviours of Charles chatting to plants and most recently the situation with Prince Ginger and his American wife. And Prince Andrew hasn't exactly helped.

I don't see Charles being a popular King, so it's possible he could be the last to sit on an increasingly English throne as the Union of the UK breaks up.

I agree that we could be approaching the end of monarchy. At least, the end of it as anything other than a set of titles some families squabble over.

I see the complete failure of the crown to act regarding Johnson's prorogation, etc., as being another nail. We need some way of overseeing these things - hopefully without the ridiculous post hoc supreme court action. (The SC was right. But it should have been dealt with before prorogation was announced.)

Sajid Javid in stand off with Rishi Sunak over covid testing Javid said to be pushing for DH to be allowed reprioritise existing funding so it can continue with Covid surveillance Extraordinary given ministers were already in No 10 before Cabinet was delayed

Major Government row over end of Covid testing Two sources tell Times that Javid is asking for more money for testing & surveillance that goes beyond spending review envelope However a health source insists Javid just wants to reprioritise existing Budgets

@Steven_Swinford

The row - and the severity of it -appears to have caught Boris Johnson completely off guard Sources suggest that he failed to realise the severity of the dispute between Sunak & Javid Led to bizarre sight of ministers arriving at Cabinet only to be turned away

If they did of course.

As little as under 1 in 1000 Covid deaths reported have been of people with no underlying serious conditions. Overwhelmingly Covid deaths are of those with serious underlying conditions, often coupled with old age, itself a serious underlying condition.

But we take the lazy option of recording all those deaths as due to Covid, simply because it is a new and unfamiliar disease which they have coincidentally caught.

We could have done the same previously with the common cold, for all those who died after having coincidentally caught a cold, but didn't since that was such a routine illness.

Maybe as we learn to live with Covid, it will become such a routine ailment that we'll stop automatically using it as the cause of death for all who have happened to catch it around the period of their death. i.e. within 28 days, or within 60 days of a positive test, the latter used for the 2020 figures.

Just imagine how many deaths would have been recorded as due to the common cold if they automatically included all who died within 60 days / two months of catching a cold.

That rather puts the issue into perspective, does it not?

As I've already posted many times, a little less hysteria is in order.

Less hysteria OK, but I shall continue to wear my mask

That lithium stuff...

João Mendes Cabeças, the captain of the nearest port in the Azorean island of Faial, told Reuters over the weekend that lithium-ion batteries in the electric vehicles were “keeping the fire alive”, adding that specialist equipment was required to extinguish it. It was not clear whether the batteries sparked the fire.

Follow the Science ...
You and they miss the point... . The purpose of a mask is to reduce the velocity of expelled breath so that particles do not get projected far... . Moreover the lifetime of individual virins in free air is very short due to UV and drying out, and the only ones which survive for any time are the heavier globules...

I believe there are two possible responses to the Russia / Ukraine situation. One will work, the other will fail.

1) Send thousands of ordinary people to Ukraine armed with products that make rich people even richer. Write off the casualties as a sacrifice that the rich people are willing to make for the sake of preserving their wealth.

2) Send all of the dirty Russian money which has been stolen from the Russian people and invested in the U.K. back to Russia.

I think option 2 might make a few influential Russians sit up and listen if they think their wealth is going to be at the mercy of the basket case Russian economy.

I wonder which of the two is most likely to be implemented?

The Russian economy is more self-sufficient than those of the West - sanctions are not terribly frightening to them.

Is Putin expecting one of his security council to be wearing an IED? The Russians can make impressive looking buildings: I recall passing through Moscow Airport in 1984, with it's astonishing ceiling covered in varying lengths and widths of very large and wide gold cylinders on end, way up there in the distance. Food in the triple glazed (two inches between each pane of glass) hotel, was at the same level of inedibility as Aeroflot airline food but smaller in portion. Everyone was thin, I didn't see any big boned people. Armed soldiers loitered everywhere. Yellow water had stained water basins in an otherwise plush and spotless hotel. Cold, like really really cold - minus 15 C was announced over the Tannoy while we were being shuttled from the airport by bus. Most didn't understand anything we said to them. All English words were read off a sheet in Russian, joined together when read out as a rush of English.

No use being logical, we are speaking of governments.

They'll do what they always do, take no action other than continuing to complain about Russian behaviour.

It's the fairytale approach, "We'll huff and we'll puff 'til we blow your house down".
