I sort of agree. The only issue is that some people's interpretation of a trip to the countryside causes the breakdown of social distancing. If that is widespread enough it could justify a ban.
I can accept your argument as rational. But we were told, repeatedly, that it was because of the possibilities of accidents and breakdowns - not breakdown of social distancing.

The Cummings presser opened a few more questions

One aspect that Cummings used to justify his jaunts was that he needed to get back to important job running the country (hence the scenic birthday castle visit 'test drive') - yet he said early on that govt 'special advisers' weren't eligible to access testing.

So was his role as 'special adviser' granting him special exemptions / keyworker privileges for his travel to & from, & around Durham - much as Farage promoted himself to a key worker role as an excuse to see the seaside beside the seashore.

Teachers call for clarification on UK list of ‘key workers’

Top of the list of key workers are those in the health and social care sectors, including doctors, nurses, midwives, social workers and care workers, as well as support staff and people working in producing and distributing medical supplies.

Then come those providing essential public services, including mortuary workers, journalists involved in keeping people informed about coronavirus and those in the justice system. People working in the food supply chain are also included, as are those in prisons, policing, the military, some local government workers and people in education and childcare.

Workers key to keeping air, road and rail transport running — both passenger and freight — will also qualify, as will staff in utilities, including telecommunications, electricity and water supplies, and the essential chemicals workers.

You see, I do not think you're puritanical, fwiw. And I'm not at all convinced you either mean or believe that, as a tory. I don't mean that as an insult, only as an observation between more or less rational adults. Johnson is becoming too expensive a disaster.
I actually do take public health seriously and give a lot of time helping people improve their fitness and general wellbeing. Earlier this year, I won the local authority’s volunteer of the year award for the work I do in public health and wellbeing. Unbeknown to me, I had been nominated by the local doctor’s surgeries through who I promote / work with to recruit people onto my organised bike rides. I don’t really know why I’m telling you this, because you mean fuckall to me anyway.

By the nature of the people involved in the work I do, Coronavirus would have very serious implications for them.

You see, I actually do something. I suspect like most hard left hypocrites, you just sit at your keyboard making assumptions that make you feel very superior whilst actually achieving nothing.

But that is a gross exaggeration of the true risk. The chance of an accident stopping a journey's completion or a breakdown on any single journey is miniscule.

In seventy years of riding and driving neither has ever happened to me on one of my own vehicles, and just one breakdown on an army truck, needing a tow from Swansea to mid Hampshire.

I agree the risk on an individual journey is tiny. Yet that rationale was pushed and pushed. I found it risible at the time - and still do. (Especially as so many vehicles have problems, thus requiring assistance, due to having NOT been used during lockdown. Have read of all too many who can't get them started or, having got them going find something else, or re-starting for return journey, caused problems.)

But again that doesn't apply to Cummings. He's been commuter driving to Downing Street all the time.

So whether you meant it or not, it's looking for ways to continue the witch hunt, however invalid or unlikely they are.

He's far from being the only one in our society of a privileged establishment to have blatantly broken the rules for entirely personal reasons. Start with the entire royal family.

Cumming's will be Going's soon enough but not just yet, a crippled man can't throw his crutch away until there's something else to prop him up. When the replacement is found he'll go, he's now just a very heavy weight around BJ's neck which I am deriving great pleasure from.

But what if everyone did it? By probability cars would break down, accidents would happen, unnecessary extra strain / risk would be placed on services. That was a major part of the reason for the movement restrictions.

Whenever you think of some fanciful activity that you think is ok, ask yourself that question, what if everyone did it? You will justify your actions by saying, well not everyone is doing it, and you would be correct. Not everyone is doing it because some people think of others and not themselves and act responsible. Unlike Dominic Cummings actions, which you seem to support.

WTF They're all jumping on the myopic Mr Magoo bandwagon

Michael Gove admitted driving with bad eyesight today as he leapt to the defence of his close friend Dominic Cummings.

Gove ... Asked by presenter Nick Ferrari if he would have made the 60-mile round trip he said: 'I have, on occasions in the past, driven with my wife in order to make sure, what's the right way of putting it.'

He then added that 'people who know me would know that I am not an authority on driving' and said he took seven attempts to pass his driving test.

I thought at the time and still do that that was a post priori justication. The real important steps were in closing schools, in curtailing public transport , particularly the underground, and social gatherings eg pubs, football matches, horse racing.
It is noteworthy that evidence is emerging that personal services eg nail polishing, hair dressing were very serious vectors. The California outbreak being identified as a nail salon...Two people within arms length for an extended period.

Just picked up on a scientific paper with the following facts . An average virus shedder is outputting 7 million copies of the virus in every millilitre of liquid from their lungs , but outlyers might be 1000 times more potent. . That droplets with a probability of 30% of containing a live virus can persist for 8 minutes in still air and circulate, before either dehydration, and presumably becoming non viable

That justification seemed to be because there was pretty much no other evidence or rationale to stop such travel.

What is the impact of someone receiving too few copies of the virus to cause covid-19? Does it have any impact on them whatsoever?

What's wrong with hunting witches?
When my daughter was very young she was a lazy mare and didn't like walking along the street with me if we had to go somewhere. To keep her amused I told her to keep an eye open for anyone that she thought was a Witch and tell me straight away. So there we are quietly strolling along when suddenly she shouts out " THERE'S ONE! " at the top of her voice pointing to a little old lady across the road who leapt out of her skin with shock.

Actually I was amazed just how many Witches there are among us. ;)

Nothing I have read has indicated that there is or is not a minimal threshold for infection. Logic suggests that the minimal threshold is one extremely lucky virus particle..but it is possible that Human white cells might handle one.

The Royal Family are a tourist attraction. Cummings was instrumental in designing the lockdown measures which the public were expected to follow. It’s essential that the rule makers follow their own rules and that they do not insult the public by lying to them when they get busted for breaking them. It’s lesson 1 on day 1 of the leadership course. Cummings is now a national joke and is a figure of ridicule. Anything associated to him will now be disregarded by the public, including any future measures to keep them safe. He should act like a grown up, face the fact he’s done wrong and step aside.
At one point yesterday, I momentarily felt sorry for his parents having to witness their son being exposed as a liar and a fraud on national television. Up until that point they may have been proud of his achievements, but then to witness what he does to get there must have been a crushing disappointment for them. He’s an embarrassment.
