Go back 15 years ago and I get your point but China has moved on,market stall rubbish is still available from China, most of it comes out of Yuwi.
Very soon Mc Donnell Douglas,General Electric(Engines) and Shanghai Aircraft Co will produce a jet commercial plane to compete with Airbus and Boeing.
Wanxiang of Hangzhou now control 70% of the worlds bearing industry, they now supply the front corner of most of the worlds prestigious vehicles, annual revenue 52 billion US dollars.
They seem to have access to finance to buy 5 axis and 7 axis machining centres, allowing some very close tolerance and high quality work,in the last 5 years I am particularly pleased with the quality of work coming out from China.
They have managed to build over 6000 miles of high speed trains with some amazing stations whilst we have been arguing over 100 miles....will the Chinese build HS2,they must be the world leader in high speed train technology?
I assume you haven't visited China recently,it would open your eyes to what we are up against on the world market.
KudosDave
No Japan first place then South Korea, China are only third. Japan has speed record but no one goes over 350 km/h in ordinary service. France and Spain are in the top 5.

May and Hammond U-turn on the C4 NICs,see the lady can do a U-turn when it suits....what worries me is that Hammond appears the only sensible one in this government and May can use this mess up to get rid of him and bring in a cliff jumping Brexiter.
David Davis admitted today that despite all of the government departments working hard on Brexit they haven't costed out a no-deal Brexit. As no-deal is starting to appear May's preferred option, maybe the only option that the EU would give her, then why haven't we costed no-deal.
This would appear to confirm that this government haven't a clue what they are doing and May and team are not up to the task, which is making it more important that we cannot trust her to get a good deal out of the EU.
Still we know that she can U-turn,unlike Maggie,if the going gets tough....the budget was hardly tough.

The Chinese must have built longer total tracks than France and Japan?
KudosDAve
They have more rail but cover less of the population. Interesting factoid the km (ticket) is cheaper in France than in China! In terms of the amount of high-speed tracks, Spain ranks first in Europe with 3100 km worth, putting it second in the world behind China, which has 19369 km.

I've never visited China, but would like to at some point. An opportunity or reason to go there has never presented itself. I only mention this because I detect from your last sentence you consider yourself as being aloof due to dealing extensively in Chinese products.

That aside, I'm aware of China's manufacturing capability, my brother in law designs multi axis machine centres which he now manufactures in China. Chinese manufacturers are the only customer of his products, which is a good indication of where we are.

The culture that we have fallen into in this country, where unimaginative individuals essentially act as spivs at the dockyard flogging Chinese goods that the majority of people don't need. These people are hoovering up this stuff with borrowed money. It can only end in pain and disaster.

I think you don't want to see anything wrong with the EU's rhetoric.
The UK has decided to leave, the EU should not TRY to stop us leaving. Doing so will simply whip up more anti-EU sentiments across the EU and will ultimately lead other member countries to the same binary choice in our last referendum.
The reality is the EU holds all the cards at the moment.
All this talk about assuring that ANY deal with us to be less favourable than membership does nothing to enhance the standing of the EU and prevent any common sense deal that will benefit both sides. It will make sure that we can't join the single market or customs union. That is just as damaging to the EU as to the UK if not more so to the EU.

Right. Well there you have it. You have a low opinion of this country. So many wonderful people living here. And you put them down with that statement. And I am SO glad you lost the vote. Now you may see some of the people who do not have a low opinion - come to the fore. And maybe - in time - your opinion will change.

Remember the Olympics? Didn't we all think that would be an unmitigated disaster? How did that turn out? This is a great country. Some great people - amazing history - beautiful countryside - able to not take itself seriously (for those brought up on Monty Python etc) - loads of jobs (I see this morning in the news unemployment dropped again to 4.7%) - a great capital city - amazing walks - public transport.

But. Not everybody agrees right? Ain't that the truth.
There are many wonderful people everywhere, our misfortune is that there are enough living here who have a distorted view of our race as being special in some way.
Since "our race" is made up of Genes from almost all others, this is a pretty childish point of view.
And by the way get this into your head
The result of the Referendum was a Major Loss for all but a very small rich minority, so don't try making childish smug remarks about winning something.
What will come to the fore are what usually does when a ship sinks.
Rats!

No,my policy is to buy the best value at the best price, that doesn't necessarily mean the cheapest,my Blackline tools range is not Snap-on,nor is it supermarket quality,a good quality product at a mid range price.
I buy from the UK when that produces the right product and actually am bringing back a lot of work back to the UK,but UK companies want horrendous money for tooling production, tool makers always strike me as the most expensive UK discipline.
Those machining centres used to be Italian but now seem to be Taiwanese or South Korean.
The cheapest product is now being sold on e-bay,these guys give the impression that they are UK businesses, sometimes they have a UK vat number and UK address. But when you check the vat No and the address it often does not exist.
They ship as much stuff as they can cram into a 40 foot container, delivered to a fulfilment warehouse in the UK,under declare the value by 90%,thereby defrauding our customs of vat and duty.
Then they sell the product on e-bay,saying they issue a vat invoice, but usually don't ,thereby defrauding our HMRC of the vat. Most Brit customers don't care because the goods are very cheap without the vat.
HMRC seem powerless to stop this trade,I don't think they have the power to look inside the accounts of e-bay. The rest of Europe has a team called Snake to stop this,we played with Snake for a month but decided UK law wouldn't allow us to take action....the EU want £2 billion because our weakness at stopping this illegal trade is costing the EU,the U.K. Is seen as the weak link into Europe.

so there's always going to be somebody else to blame if it all goes spectacularly wrong.
And the Government are ahead of you there, which minister when questioned by Laura Keisenberg remarked, "It's a nightmare, but the voters decided on it and we have to deliver it"
And "It's the most complicated thing we've ever done?"
The Government have already started blaming the Brexit Voters, haven't they?
personally I think they are well within their rights to do so!

Excellent description of the Government and Elite there tillson, they even moved our factory to China then tried to sell off cheap fakes as bona fide Quality Branded Products here. It cost them the market.

You are right, every time I go to Guangzhou I get a sore throat, the pollution is not as bad as in the past but still not good. I was very ill on one trip but fortunately the hotel I was in was attached to a medical centre.
A blue sky in Guangzhou is a rare event.
When the G20 was in Hangzhou the government closed down any polluting factories within 150 mile radius for 6 weeks....it worked I have never seen blue skies like that in China....imagine if we closed down every factory within a 150 mile radius of Birmingham UK.
