Does this mean that stuff coming in from the EU will be waved through tariff free because it’s difficult to check, and we’ve got nobody clever enough to work out how to do it? But our stuff going into the EU will be checked and subject to tariffs, because they are clever and can work it out?

This sounds like another instalment of the COVID Franchise:- Coronavirus 2 The Massive Trade Fuckup. Featuring Alok Sharma & Directed by Boris Johnson.
At the moment stuff that I have ordered from outside the EU (OK - China) seems to be sitting awaiting customs clearance. (Only small and under £15.)

If they can't manage to clear stuff that is from a source they already need to check, how will they cope with additonal checking?

(Sure, I don't know who is to blame for the delay. But ...)

Given this evidence regarding how inept the government is, how can anyone, anywhere, possible believe that they will make a good & successful job of Brexit?
easy.
They just water down their objectives until they are met then claim we have achieved world first status.

they just reduce the spot check percentage.
It's 3% at the moment. Making it 1% will triple the throughput.

I (fairly obviously) have no idea if it is a spot-check or just slow. Have to say, I have never yet had to pay anything - everything I have previously bought has sailed through.

I fully agree with you about them achieving a worlds first. They will end up being the worlds first government to impose economic sanctions on its own country.

You see, I can’t find that word I’m searching for to describe them. Inept, incompetent and all of those sorts of words aren’t powerful enough, they have gone beyond those words and into new territory. Perhaps the word doesn’t yet exist.

Maybe how we achieve a higher employment rate in the UK than any of the others.*

Killing off those not in employment.

*The employment rate has risen from 70% to 76%.

There might be an American word for it ... they had a three year start on us.

You see, if you want to check stuff you need to have somewhere set aside i in which you check it. People used to call them yards or pounds and they have gates and railings and things, and people with clipboards and sniffer dogs .. Now even little old Ireland has been building these at Dublin, Cork and Roslare. and even recruiting the odd customs inspector. These yards are ready, and the customs lads are currently doing contact tracing. I haven't seen much building of these yards in Larne.

Those words were once adequate but we've so often used them when not fully justified that they've lost their impact.

The word that is closest to your need is:

Useless:

Being of no use whatsoever at any time for any need.

In fact, inept isn’t the right word, it doesn’t adequately describe how badly the government is performing. The terrifying thing is that Matt Handcock stands at the podium, waving his arms around & applauding himself, set against a backdrop of nearly 70000 dead.
What's more frightening to me is that the public seem to think him a safe pair of hands, credible. It's like stumbling into a parallel world where everything's become inverted.

Have you noticed he can't say the words up or down now without moving his right arm up or down even when up or down is related to something totally different to CV.

I bet there are times when he thinks to himself why on earth did I agree to join BJs shambles cabinet. I could have had a nice cushy number like Jeremy Hunt, heading up some parliamentary committee. Get to ask the Government some awkward questions, make myself look a hero and land myself some profitable directorships when all this is over.
Boris is the same, just watch the body language of the man. When asked a question he [Boris] glances left and right to see if someone else can give an answer because he can't.
When the question is set Boris stretches his arms out either side crucifix style hoping one of the others can cut in and save him. Observe him next time, am I right or am I wrong ?

I don’t think the public do view him as a safe pair of hands. The readers comments in The Mail are scathing. He’s being damaged by the way he’s handling Coronavirus and there is more anti Brexit feeling in the comments.

I think Starmer is making inroads and is doing a good opposition job, something I still think Corbyn was very poor at doing.

Corbyn cared more about shaping the Labour party away from the 'pink tories' among their ranks than winning power.
I do hope Starmer is more practical and work with soft conservative MPs to put up a more credible alternative to this government.
