brake cut offs with PAS systems

Just a thought and forgive my ignorance as I'm a complete newbie but if I only fit a PAS sensor and no throttle, do I really need motor cut outs on the breaks?

Am i right in thinking the motor only assists when you are pedalling, so you just need to stop pedealling right? Or have I gone miles off track.

I'm one for being safe so if I need it, I need it, but wondered if it was something more for those with throttle controls.

Pedelec e-bikes don't normally have brake cutouts, stopping pedalling performs that function. It's on bikes that can run while not pedalling, normally those with throttles, that cutouts are necessary.

Hi. My Freego Eagle has a throttle and brake cutouts and to be honest I wouldn't like to ride it without the brake cutouts as there is no way you can get around very tight places without cutting the power to the motor??

You should fit them if you can. The power doesn't stop immediately when you stop pedalling. On some bikes it goes on for more than a second., which would be quite dangerous in an emergency stop. Use a switch on just the back brake if you don't want to do both. The switches aren't difficult to fit so why leave them off?

The pedal sensor can take a half turn before power is switched to the motor, and more importantly with regard to safety, the motor may continue to run-on for a second or two after the pedals have ceased to turn.
This can result in the motor cutting-in during slow manoeuvring. So keeping the brake (with cut-out) semi depressed (breaking the circuit to the motor) is wise whilst negotiating around objects at slow speed (bollards, people, glaziers, etc). Even on bikes with pedelec only, unless using more sophisticated (expensive and complicated) torque sensors, I would recommend installing at least one switched brake handle.
