I have a My2018 HaiBike with a Bosch Performance Speed motor. A few times now while pedalling the motor will lock up. Very quickly and aggressively. It feels like a mechanical lock, as though it jams. It first happened a year ago and I took it in to check for codes and to check the motor and it was fine. It sat for a couple days and then never happened again until today.
It hasn’t happened a lot, but the few times it has happened has been in the rain. The display appears fine, and I happen to have a second battery and it happens to both batteries. The cranks will suddenly lock up, and won’t unlock until you backpedal a bit. Sometimes it will happen a few times in quick succession, other times it might take a few minutes. Because it’s so rare and intermittent when it does happen it’s hard to guess if it’s random, or caused by something. At times I thought it could be tied to an increase in torque or cadence, but it’s hard to say. When it’s not occurring the motor performs completely normal.
Any guess if there is anything on the electrical side that could cause the motor to jam? I’m suspicious of that as the rain is always the constant. If it’s not that the rain would have to be a coincidence and there would have to be something wrong mechanically. This makes the most sense to me, but the problem has a couple thousand kms between occurrences, which would be odd for a mechanical problem.
Side note: I’m a bike mechanic so the simple things like say chain jamming and some other basic things have been ruled out.
