Bolt through Axle options

So on the realisation the my bike uses bolt though axles, I'm guessing my only kit options are restricted to hub drives. Is that correct?

You can't fit hub motors without dropouts. Post some pictures, we'll advise.

If your bike uses the bolt thru axle type ( the type where one has to remove the axle fully to allow wheel removal) then one has to use a mid motor.
If you have 9mm qr axles (the type that simply allows the wheel to drop out once loosened then you can use either a hub or a mid motor.

A mid drive will be best, the rear drop outs have a little leeway if one need to deepen the drop out by approx. 2mm for a 12mm axle to sit in better.

it looks like you have standard 8mm quick release on the rear wheel. Can you take the rear wheel out and take a picture of the dropout?

A 12 x 10mm hub axle isn't going to sit in fully and would have a tendency to roll out, although on the lhs one has scope to deepen the drop out on the rhs it is not favourable as it would weaken the derailleur hanger. One could use a pair of torque arms to rely on keeping a hub motor in situ but they would idealy need to be a one piece arm using the mudguard fixing point shown in the pics.
Rather then risk ruining a frame a mid drive will be better.

Thanks Nealh. I'm thinking a BBS01 would be good for my 18mile round trip commute.

I hate all the plastic box batteries though. Would much prefer something that looked like this:

And hopefully no throttle or brake sensors (though perhaps a kill switch)

A small battery is ok and are ideal for lighter solution , my 12s 2p though has 20a LG hg2 3000mah cells rather the a 10a rated cell of these two. Limit the current to max 12a with the bbs and the cells should have a decent life cycle.
My 2p battery I can get 30 odd miles in pas1 on flatish terrain, typically the max current I draw is 4.4a even when towing a laden trailer as I can get buy nicely in pas 1 or sometimes pas2 with my kt systems.

The GA celled batterry is the better discharge cell out of the two but if one used low pas all the time then the 50e woul dbe better for range. One has to weigh up the terrain and power level usage to decide which or if these would be of use.

A quick search doesn't show up any UK suppliers of kits coming up with these kind batteries. I guess it's down to me building a kit up myself?

Any diy bike kit of a more bespoke nature means buying from china sources, the larger battery kits form woosh are for the masses with longer range.

I guess buying a kit without battery and sourcing that from elsewhere is an option though some of those batteries seem to come with controllers so I need to increase my knowledge a bit yet.

Oh cr*p. That cable routing is going to foil the mid drive option as well, isn't it?

the cables won't cause a problem if you go for a BBS01 kit.
Still, you have the option to fit a rear hub if you so wish.
