I think there's a huge amount of Japanese/Western car design pooling already, since all the major Japanese car companies have long been tied into western car companies at first or second remove*. Many east/west models are just clones with body mods already, and I presume this project will be the same, mainly just the skin being different.

*Examples: Mazda/Ford, Nissan/Renault/Mitsubishi, Isuzu/GM/Honda, Misubishi/Daimler-Benz, Suzuki's partnerships with GM, V.W. and FIAT.
