I'm not allowed pets in my flat; but there's nothing in the lease about eBikes.

Reminds me of the guy who was proud of riding 2000 miles by e-bike going downstream next to the Mississippi river. No-one seemed to cotton on that it was flat or downhill all the way!

So is my commute ;-)

But I get your point - the average speed for the men's 8 is only 14mph over 1.24 miles.

Makes NRG's point even more valid, anyone who cant ride at 14 mph on the flat for a little over one mile probably shouldn't be on a bike anyway!

If the average speed is 14mph then surely an electric bike is the right choice. :)

They may have been anticipating a head wind. There are times when i have done a flat ride, medium power and struggled to hit 10mph,yet other times with no power it can be 26mph

True in isolation, but in this context the boats with their very un-aerodynamic rowers also get slowed down so they no longer achieve the speed. Their upright bodies slow them as much as the bike rider's, and there's eight of them in the boats mentioned with the wind eddying and dragging around them and their 16 oars as they are swung back against the wind for each next stroke.
