Best puncture proof tyers?

I was considering solid tyres, of should I get Schwalbe Marathon? Are the pre-filled slimed ones any good? Slimed Marathons with tyre liners? Planning a 240 mile journey, would much rather not be mucking about with a puncture repair kit on the side of the road, most likely in the rain...

No pneumatic tyre is proof against all punctures, but Schwalbe Marathon Plus are the best in that respect, avoiding almost all punctures. The downside of their thick inner layer is that they are are stiff and less good at absorbing road irregularities so less comfortable.

Adding a liner would make them almost solid to ride on and gain little protection, if any.

And personally I would never add slime to an MP since that tyre gives that level of protection anyway. Any more drastic a puncture could exceed what slime could achieve anyway and the slime would leave you with an impossibly sticky mess to repair in the event of a puncture. So either/or, not both.

Solid tyres are horrible to ride and less safe. Regular tyre carcases are carefully designed to be laterally stable but vertically supple. Solid tyres being all of one compromise material fall short on both, laterally squidgy so less stable and safe, while not as compliant vertically so less comfortable.

i run tubeless with super gravity tyres and never had a puncture all i do is top up 60mil every 3 months for each tyre and that's it.

Reports I have seen on solid tyres are that what you gain on lack of punctures you lose on broken spokes.

My own experience of slime was very negative; punctures on both wheels at different times quite soon after fitting. In both cases inside of tyre horribly gunged, and inner tube so gunged it wasn't practicable to patch.

If you have Marathon Plus you are very unlucky to get a puncture, I don't think the slime and extra liners would help.

Tubeless sounds really helpful, I've no experience of them myself.

Thank for all your comments! I think I'll go with Marathon Plus because my ancient Dahon P8 still has the original Kinetix, and I can't locate any "Tubeless Ready" in 20":

Tyre technology seems to have moved on rather a lot since I was pedalling around in the 80's, and tubeless looks like a great idea. I had initially assumed "Tubeless" meant the same as "Solid":


Even back then punctures were rare, hopefully they'll be even rarer with Marathon Plus.

Are the K-Guards any good? Are they better than Marathon Plus? Their "Level 6" is "Smartguard":

Almost but not quite!

As futher reassurance I ran Marathon Plus on three different bikes with 27", 26" and 20" wheels during 14 years and only suffered one slow puncture which was as much my own fault as anything else. I'd chosen to ride along a cycle path where the blackthorn hedge alongside had been cut with the debris all along the path. But that pucture was so slow that I was able to ride the seven miles home with only one pump top-up.

So in 14 years of cycling no Marathon Plus had ever caused me to repair a puncture or change a tube on the road.

That looks very interesting indeed! I wonder how well it would work on my ancient Kinetix? The Psi seems more suited for trails - road going might be hard going at 40 to 50psi, mine are usually 85psi. I'll certainlyhave a good think about this.

I still have one of the original factory fitted Marathons on my Dahon Helios, they do indeed last... but not usually this long (there is no tread). I'll buy a pair of Marathons because it's time, perhaps I'll have a go at turning them tubeless and if that doesn't work, I'll still have new Marathons.

the sealant will glue the tyre on so wont go anywhere with high psi in the tyre you just need a tight fit on the rim or add more rim tape.

this is the stuff i use
