April 2, 20233 yr Hi New member here, currently running a Bbs02 on a Giant talon but I'm looking at a motor.upgrade to a cyc x1 stealth 1500w and I can't decide which battery to go for. CYC offer one using Samsung 50E cells 10ah for about £460 but I've read the 50E cells are not great and the capacity doesn't seem that big for the price and I also don't like the mounting option it doesn't appear to be easily removable. At about £450 the capacity isn't great either. I also get confused with which BMS I would need and get a bit lost. Wondering if anyone has a recommendation? Cheers
April 2, 20233 yr https://ebikebatteries.co.uk/ they can custom build you a batt to any size shape and capacity you want but it wont be cheap. the batt depend on how many amps you want to pull from it non stop at max power so if the motors controllers max setting is 30a then you need a batt capable of that many amps.
April 2, 20233 yr Author Cheers for the reply, I have sent them a message asking for a quote and just waiting for a response. I was trying to weigh up my options. Seen a pack on sale using Samsung 30q cells too but each one I find someone has a complaint about the cells!
April 2, 20233 yr if you get jimmy to make the pack then he will have different cells you can choose from and have warranty. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2lrSw5zli8:305
April 2, 20233 yr Author Ok will wait and see what Jimmy comes.back with, it was Andy's video that sent me in his direction, been watching his videos for a while. I was hoping to get a few viable options on the table to fit in with my budget.
April 2, 20233 yr the batt is the most expensive part on the bike and every single person that comes on here after getting a batt from china ect always ends in disaster and money down the drain and the bin lorry set on fire as throw them in the bin my bosch batt is like 13ah and there £633 and can bus locked so cant use anything else
April 2, 20233 yr Author My current kit was from psw power which is pretty much Ali express. To be fair it's been ok hasn't let me.down but God knows if the capacity is as advertised. The prices is crazy isn't it Found this for 400 which looks ok but not sure if the cells would be up to the job https://ebikesystems.co.uk/product/52v-18ah-ebike-battery-samsung-30q-high-performance-50amps
April 2, 20233 yr thats the thing with these batts you never know what cells are in them as it only takes one bad cell to go wrong and kaboom. https://lightning-rods10.mybigcommerce.com/single-stage-big-block-middrive-rhd/ you will need some batt for that thing but it can go up a dam spill way going 45mph
April 2, 20233 yr Author That thing is a monster! Run that one off the mains with a very big extension lead!
April 2, 20233 yr Author It's mad to think how much these bikes/motors have come on even just in the last few years. The Bbs02 felt quick when i got.it.but now it.bores me!
April 2, 20233 yr yet the batts get bigger and more expensive m8 has the hd and a 20ah batt but with the throttle the range is about 17 miles as dont paddle as goes to work on it going 40mph.
April 2, 20233 yr For cyc one would think you would be looking at a far better battery then a basic off the shelf jobbie, something with 4 or 5p of moli 45b, 42a or sam 40t or a 6p of vct6 at least. Proper high drain /current cells , forget the 30Q power tool batteries. The 10a mediocre high current cells are ideal for lesser motors , if using them with the cyc one will want them in 8 or 10p. April 2, 20233 yr Author What are your thoughts on the battery cyc recommend? Their own 10ah 52v using Samsung 50e?
April 3, 20233 yr You need to choose your battery depending upon how much range you are looking for and your riding style. If you intend to let the motor do all of the work for you at 1500 watts then you will be pumping 30 amps out of the battery, so a 10ah battery will give you 20 minutes of continuous riding, which incidentally is about the same range as a standard Surron. I use a 20ah battery on a BBSHD off road and with heavy use I can go for an hour of playing in the mud. And with light use I can extend it to give me around 30 miles of gentle trail riding. April 3, 20233 yr Author This is the sort of thing I was trying to get my head around. Do you think.something like this would be an option https://custombuilt-ebikes.co.uk/product/52v-19ah-downtube-ebike-battery/ 19ah and continuous discharge 30amps, says it's good for.up to 1500 watts or so.i need something with a bigger BMS since peak watts can be higher?
April 3, 20233 yr Yes that’s more like what you need. I use a backpack battery because I don’t have enough room to mount it on the bike easily and I want to keep the weight off the frame.
April 3, 20233 yr I noticed the cyc x1 is rated at 2Kw, so even that battery won’t unleash its full potential. The problem is weight and size limitations on your bike for an even bigger battery. Also it will put even more strain on your gear set at 2Kw. I get some nasty crunches when I get it wrong at 1500 watts.
April 3, 20233 yr Author It's a nightmare this battery shopping! I'm glad I asked! So does that mean really im looking for something with a 50amp BMS?
April 3, 20233 yr Author Something along these lines https://www.electroncycles.co.uk/product/52v-17-5ah-smaller-cased-semi-high-power-long-range-50a-2100w-down-tube-4a-charger/
April 3, 20233 yr I like the bit in the description where it says “ This battery is physically the smallest we do yet still have enough power for the BBSHD and CYC Stealth motors”.
April 3, 20233 yr And to make matters even more complicated for you the X1 can use a 72v battery. It has a BAC855 controller which is a monster.
April 3, 20233 yr With that size of motor the controller will have to be at least 30A continuous rating, meaning that, yes, it will be 50-60A max. If you get a battery that is capable of delivering 50A max it will be too little. To avoid heat stress and buggering it up within about a year, you need a battery capable of delivering 10-20% more current than your maximum controller rating. This means something in the region of 66-70A. This is before considering the actual capacity of the battery. What you are actually talking about is a motor bike with bicycle brakes and frame, that were never designed to take the weight and stresses you are about to impose on them. Why not just buy a motorbike and be legal?
April 3, 20233 yr I was just thinking along similar lines. The cyc x1 is an absolute power house. Maybe better off upgrading to a BBSHD and be done with it. Cheaper, safer and more reliable. And the cyc pro gen 3 is even more ridiculous at 5kW. Edited April 3, 20233 yr by AGS
April 3, 20233 yr Author This is why I'm losing my mind! None of the review videos online have monster batteries as far as I can tell, Cyc themselves don't recommend their own monster battery for the x1 stealth. I don't get why the supplier would recommend a battery that isn't up to the job. Am I missing something. This is taken from the cyc website The B-52 & B-52L packs with the Samsung 50e cells are fantastic for those wanting to go for a day out on the bike and cover long distances where weight isn't the top priority. With 520wh & 780wh you can expect these packs to cure your range anxiety. When it comes to power capabilities, these packs are best suited for the Photon and X1 Stealth kits. You can consider them as an option for your X1 Pro 3500W version but it's best to note that you're not going to get the full 3500W out of the system.
