Battery problem

While about a mile from home yesterday the display on my yosepower rear hub went dead, when I opened the battery this is what I found

What is likely to have caused the problem?

High current being drawn through a poor/bad/corroded electrical contact creates heat that melts the plastic.

Certainly repairable assuming you can obtain parts or are handy enough to fit an alternative connector.
