Hi all i currently have an bafang bbs02 48v on my orange alpine 6 I'm about to programme the controller to use a 52v battery for more range not power the power is fine i have the programing cable and I've download all the files I need and I have a really good video from biktrix to follow. My question is probably stupid or obvious but once I do this will I still be able to use my 48v batteries with as I always carry a second battery on big rides. Thanks

If you program it for the 52v battery, with a LVC of say 42.0v, the 48v one will work fine, but it'll cut off at 42v instead of the normal 39v or whatever you have had it set to. There's not much charge left by the timea 48v battery gets to 42v, so you won't lose much.

Great thanks I always take a spare battery on big rides of about 60 miles and swap for the last 10 miles so I have full power all the way home as by then I'm nearly dying and don't want lower power when my legs are giving out. Also I've tried reddit and the only answers I get are sarcastic there's plenty of info out there look.Is it true I'll get more range from a 52v battery.

Theoretically, you'd get more range from a 52v battery with the same number of amp-hours as a 48v one because it has 14/13 more cells in it, but your controller will give you the same number of amps, which means 14/13 times as much power when you demand it, so you'll use it up a bit quicker. Also, the motor will have a slightly lower efficiency because you'll be pedalling too slow for it unless you're a real spinner. The practical difference is going to be very small. If you want more range, you need more amp-hours.

When you program it for 52v, you could cut the current down a bit to compensate. I remember a lot of BBS02s burning with 52v so you need to be careful with how much current you allow. I don't know what the limit is, so seek advice from somebody, whos actually done it.

You can set the standard BBS02B firmware to run on 52V. That's different from installing the Nilssen firmware, which is what I think the Biktrix video does.

I have a BBS02B and program cable, and it would be simple to do the new firmware. However, there doesn't seem to be a way to save the old firmware with the above tools. I also didn't see an assured source to get the old firmware back. Never went any further.

I did use the program cable to adjust the factory settings.
