battery conditioning

Sorry everyone, I can't find the info(again). I have fully discharged my new Agattu Lithium battery for the first time and now fully charged to condition. Should I repeat this process once more, or is that enough.? I think I read some contradictory advice and I am now confused. I am very paranoid about damaging the cells.

Once resets the meter's zero point, but twice is better to condition the cells fully and gain all the capacity. It's impossible to damage it on the bike or charger due to Panasonic's sophisticated management.

Anyone know if I should have conditioned the Phylion Li-ion 36v 10ah battery on my Synergie Mistral. Still shows four out of five battery condition lights after 23 miles hilly terrain. I didn't get any conditioning instructions with my e-bike..

Had it about six weeks now and done 400 miles, I posted a review here:

The same review was posted here on Pedelecs a couple of days ago but got lost or is yet to appear.

It sounds as though it's ok Kal, but conditioning isn't time dependent within reason, so you can still do a full discharge to cutout or near cutout on the bike with advantage, followed by a full charge.

Your review will appear in due course, delayed only since they go via the moderator to ensure no malicious postings get through.

Thanks Flecc.. sorry you had to repeat yourself.. I'm not great at searching the forum for old info.

My Quando II battery

So I got my Quando II three weeks ago. When I rode it home the first time, I was told the battery had a quarter charge. The yellow light went on fairly soon, especially as i rode the bike across some of the hill in Cental Park. The red light alos came on intermittently as I got closer to home... about a 5 mile ride.

Since that time, I have been charging the battery nightly after my 6-7 mile (with one killer hill) daily trip.

My Lithium ion battery has a label on it which reads: Phylion battery DC37.0 V XH370-10J

Should I still condition the battery? Two times?

By the way, I love this bike. LOVE it. It's not perfect but hey, neither am I. :)

You have done one conditioning cycle with that first drop to red LED Rob, but one more discharge cycle will make quite sure.

I agree about the Quando II, a widely unrecognised little wonder which on motor power alone outperforms many other e-bikes, and in speed restricted Europe, most other e-bikes.

Is there any way we can create some new search indexes ? subjects in alpha order would be nice...
I've also wondered, but researching and collating all the posted material would be a huge task, and updating it even more so. I'm in arrears even with my own websites on this, the Lafree site needing some tech updating and the Torq site now needing a complete rewrite of all the battery pages due to the changes.

I will soon be an owner of a 905 city with its Li poly 36v 14 A battery. I am guessing that I will need to do the 2 full discharges on that although something is nagging away at me that I once read somewhere that you shouldnt fully discharge. Is that for different technology batteries?

Thanks

Initially most rechargeable batteries need a full charge discharge cycle or two to condition the electrolyte and reach full capacity.

From then on they need treating according to type:

All lithium batteries are best charged as often as possible, avoiding full discharge for the longest life.

NiMh can be used variably but should from time to time be fully discharged, about once every ten to 20 charges, it's not critical.

NiCad batteries are best when fully discharged every use.

Lead acid batteries are best used cyclically, continuously charged and recharged as happens on cars, so treating them like lithium batteries is fine.

But to repeat, lithium, NiMh and NiCad need initial conditioning with at least two full charges and discharges, starting with a full charge on receipt before any use, even if it appears they have some charge.

Discharging should only ever be on the bike or the recommended battery charger where that has a refresh function (normally on NiMh only). Batteries should never be fully discharged using bulbs or resistors.
