When charging a battery does the BMS balance the cells continually as the voltage rises or only after the voltage reaches the desired maximum.
I always leave the charger on after the green light comes on until it‘s cold ( about a hour ) to ensure the balancing has had time to finish.
I‘m not sure whether this is a good procedure or not.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It does it right at the top of the charge, which is why you should charge to the green light each time. Leaving it for an hour is a bit excessive. If you charge it regularly, you can switch off as soon as you get the green light.

You can tell if your battery ever goes out of balance by measuring its voltage hot off the charge4. It should be close to 42.0v. If it gets down to say 41.5v, you could try leaving it on charge after the green light for an hour or so.
