Hi all,

I have a folding bike with a small rear hub (that I can't identify), generic controller, cheap key switch on the bars..
Iv'e ridden a bunch of 250w powered ebikes but this little thing has very little torque in comparison.

Iv'e been looking at upgrading with for better torque, a waterproof controller and decent display.
I was browsing the Bafang GO20 motors and kits on aliexpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32946592552.html?spm=a2g0o.cart.0.0.35a03c00YcDYgl

I was looking there as most f the local kits (In Australia) seem to be either derer vesions of this or packages super-cheap stuff like my folder seems to have.

Any better suggestions or advice on this motor (is it older stock, is therea newer Bafang motor, or indeed a better option in 250w)
How does the system work, do I need to buy their kit or better to buy components separately? I notice the price is good compared to the individual components
but there's little info on the controller they supply.

(p.s I'm not really interested in another mid drive for this bike)

Any advice at this stage is most welcome. Ta

Bonzer Skip a great find and link.
Price is very good for Bafang kit and everything you need with choices for display and PAS options.
Looks like the G020 is the SWXO2.
Controller likely to be 13-15a.

The other option it to go KT controller (where you can get up to 25a current and option of dialling back the current) and display with a Bafang motor 250w motor but as you say buying separate components will unlikely be cheaper just more choice.

I've never yet come across a motor that can't give you all the torque you need. You're looking in the wrong direction. All you need is the right controller and a battery that can provide the power it allows.

You haven't given us enough info to give specific advice. What size wheels do you have? What's the maximum current written on your controller? How much current can your battery provide (see its listing)? What voltage is the battery? How heavy are you?

Whatever components you have, it should be possible to get at least 30% more torque by adding a drop of solder to the shunt in the controller, which costs nothing.

Ah right, hey thanks.

I should have mentioned that it needs to be legal, peak at 25klm. I've built a 750w (mac) hub mtr bike and dont expect anything like that , it's just that this little motor, gets to 25klm/h/ but takes an age to do it. I'm guessing being visually smaller it may be 30Nm(?) where I understand the bafang might give me 40+ (?). Also as mentioned the higo and a decent display.. I was mostly just a bit confused with what was available in small hub motors, it seems there are different models on the bafang site but random names (eg SWX--) or could be older models or little info listed when trying to actually buy something.

It's a folding bike, 20" rear wheel.

You're misunderstanding me. Firstly, there is no legal limit to how much current you push through your 250w motor. You can use 25 amps at 36v (1000w) if you want. That's not illegal. Alternatively, you could up the voltage to 48v and use 20A for 1000W completely legally as long as you restrict the speed to 25km/h.

Secondly, it's not illegal to solder the shunt in your controller.

Thirdly, your motor is capable of a lot more than what it's presently doing.

With 20" wheels, there should be no problem to get all the torque you need from your existing motor.

Thanks vfr 400, I was just going to sell the current motor (kit) while its still new but it is something i'm curious about, how do I set the 25klm limit?, as this kit just has a LED charge indicator (no LCD etc). cheers.

There are several things you can do to get more power from it. Firstly, solder the shunt for 30% more torque, which will help you with hill climbing.

You haven't given any details of what you have, so I can't advise you how to delimit it. a good upgrade is to get a 17 amp sine wave controller with an LCD, which costs about £60. That will give you the option to derestrict as well as a much better control system.

Those controllers are dual voltage 36V/48V, so if that's still not enough power, you can go up to a 48V battery, which will give another 33% more power and speed.
