My bafang bbs01 motor has developed a loud rattling noise which occurs even more when the throttle is used. I don't feel too confident about opening up the motor and was thinking of replacing just the motor unit. Are you able to buy just the motor as all I can see for sale at conversion kits.

You don't say where you are located as then we may be able to recommend someone who might be able to take alook at it, alternatively Brighton ebikes or Woosh may even be able to service it for you if you give them a call. Or GBK sell some spares for refurbing, the BBS is quite easy to take apart and taking pics as you go along will help to put it back in the right order. How many miles has your unit covered it might be just a case of re- greasing that is needed or may be some gears/cogs need changing, generally they are fairly bullet proof.

a new motor kit costs £330, replacement bearings less than £10.

you have lots of e-bike shops near you but I think only woosh in Southend service these chain drive kits because they sell them and keep spares. You can probably post it to them. email support first.

Can you hear the noise while pedaling without power?

When you pedal the noise comes back slowly but as soon as you hit the throttle it rattles quite load

it sounds like damaged cogs.
You need to open the motor.

Is this sorted now? Heard one similar to this a little while back. Turned out to be the O ring on the end of the stator shaft had overheated causing it to rattle in the bearing rather then turning with the bearing support. It fixed up a treat and is running quietly again now. :)
