As the front derailleur is not needed with these kits, is it worth fitting one of these to help prevent the chain from jumping off the cog?

Or are they a bit of an overpriced gimmick?

You can keep your front derailleur and use it instead. You just adjust it to the correct position.

So I can remove the handlebar shifter and cable and just leave the mechanism next to the chainring?

Probably. There's two adjustable stops on the derailleur. It depends if you can wind the low stop far enough to hold it in the correct position. It should be OK. If not, you have to keep the cable and changer, and use the cable adjustment to get it in the right position.

On my trike I could not set my derailleur far enough out to work, it would have rubbed constantly.

I re-fitted my front derailleur as my chain would occasionally drop off in gears 1 & 2.
Luckily I could adjust the end stops enough so the chain doesn't rub.
375 miles on and no chain drop.
If the derailleur hadn't worked I would have bought a chain guide.
I'm sure I read Amigafan2003 had the same issue and fitted a chain guide.
