It would be interesting to see how a group of autonomous cars would fare in a closed track race. Would they just follow each other round or would the real challenge be as to how aggressive the constructors could make the programming ~ assuming the rules specify no contact.

Since all the current research into autonomous cars has been heavily safety biased, especially since some highly publicised accidents with prototypes, I suspect almost nothing is known about a more aggressive approach.

So it would probably be even more boring than the current hybrid formula one races.

Companies working on weapon systems for the US military would probably be the best for developing the aggressive software needed, so long as they didn't get too kamikaze!

BMW built an auto system onto M5 , it drove around Nurbergring faster than most folk could get it around...race authority insisted on a driver sat in seat with an over ride facility...It looked very impressive but I never saw it opposite locking...perhaps 4 wheel drift...once car starts sliding cant imagine self drive ever competing with a decent driver...how would autonomous cope in battle of wills for track position...
They do say Hamilton can get a car around a corner quicker than its possible to do so in theory !!
( You won't see much info about self drive around ring...it was hushed up but it happened...

It's one thing for a single car round the track, it's when there is more than one it would be interesting.
