Hi,

I would like to build an e-bike from the TERN D8.
The problem is that the bike front fork axle width is 74mm.
All the kits i found require a minimum of 100mm width to assemble the motor and wheel.

I saw an electric TERN D8 bike once, so there must be a way to make it electric.

Thanks

Hi,

Not really. Three motors Q85, Tongxin and Keyde have 80mm width which make it easiler to spread the fork

You can find the information here

The forks on my Dahon (same family as Tern) are also 75mm, and they're very stiff. Even a 5mm stretch could be a problem. I'd forget about a front motor. Fit a rear one so you can have any one you want. Just make sure that you get a high speed version (between 300 and 400 rpm).

Within about 2 weeks(hopefully), I'll be fitting a new rear motor to my Dahon, so I can give you a step-by step guide.

Isn't it more difficult to assemble a rear motor?
What is preferable a front or a rear motor?

What is the width of the rear axle on your Dahon?

What are the guidelines in selecting a rear motor? I believe is first must support the 8 gears the D8 has...

Tnx

Trouble is the OP wants to use a D8, which I think is the 8sp Hub Gear version? so rear version not possible. Could have crank drive or pick the derailleur version, P8? If not already bought, with rear hub & 8sp freewheel. Mikey :)

I didn't bought the bike yet, but I like the D8. Why I can't install a rear kit on them? Is it because of the number of gears?
This is the link to the bike:
Link D8 | Tern Folding Bike and Folding Bicycle Accessories | Worldwide
Is contains the specs.

It has derailleur gears, doesn't it?

I'll be fitting the Q100C to mine with 8 speed cassette. You can have 10 speed if you want with a cassette motor.

I am selling some 80mm wide motor kits HERE

PM me if you are interested.

Here is a conversion I have done a Dahon Uno

Close up of the motor

You have a choice of a low assist light (1.4kg) or medium assist (2.0kg) motor both 80mm wide.

Regards

Jerry
