A bit of bad news here:
Electric bike man in fatal crash

Hope this isn't one of our friends from this forum.

Deaths and serious injuries are common on a short stretch of road in Greenwich, I think three in the last year within 100 yards. The cyclists can share part of the blame though for overtaking stationary traffic at high speed.

Not an excuse in my book. We get low dazzling sun all the time here and one simple takes that into account when driving - taking extra care.

Not in this case according to the report - she was cycling up Liddington Hill.

Just typed Liddington into Google maps.
Seems to be an almost straight road, just a few gental banks (left and right) - no blind bends (good visability).
Liddington seems to be in a slight dip but the hills do not look steep (if you look at the terrain).
B4192 appears to be a 50mph road close to the M4.
It also has regular mobile speed cameras, so possible speed problem area.
Camera Locations - Wiltshire and Swindon

Seems such a crime when someone take's all the precautions they can and they can still be rundown by some asswipe driving carelessly - makes me mad

Have to wait and see what the courts decide.

Completely agree Footie - I've read the report and the drivers were completely 100% to blame. All this week I've been contemplating buying an AirZound pump horn - to honk back at those drivers who when overtaking me can't be arsed to leave the highway code minimum overtaking space but instead miss me by millimetres. Same again today; just a matter of time before one of them actually hits me - bet they wouldn't stop either, playing the, 'didn't see him' card.

I had one and it didn't do a lot of good, the only person who seemed to notice it was the thief who now owns it, I'm not getting another.

I bought a battery powered siren, that I hoped would make a difference - it didn't ....

However, it does make a great sound like a "deranged duck" and I use it to blast fools who stop in the towns cycle lanes to answer their mobiles (great in the summer when they have their windows open) give them a long press as I go by. I also blast it at road idiot's. I don't care if they don't hear it since when I blast it I usually burst into laughter, because I'm giving them a "duck" for their asinine parking or their brain dead driving skills ....

Quack Quack :D

I swear by my airzound. For example yesterday overtaking a bendy bus at a bus stop taking on passenger. I got right along side the cab (boy are they long) and then he pulls out to get around a parked car forcing me into the oncoming traffic - one blast of the airzound and he stops to let me go. Without it I would have been trapped stationary between the moving bendy bus and the murderous oncoming traffic - not nice.

Yeah - I'm gettin' one! Mainly to use as an attack weapon

- the whole world is intent on brushing up against me on the road - their deeds will now be broadcast to the watching public; warning them to watch out for the killer miscreant on the loose who's just tried it on with me - I'm a screamer!

Funny you say that as I thought the Air Zound gave off a loud quack. :D
BTW the 115db Air Zound quote is measured at 1 metre which is why the volume may seem a bit low when it arrives, sound levels are usually measured further away.

The airzound is loud! When pumped up to 85psi it is really loud. If I use it I normally get a scream from some pedestrian. Sorry to upset them unless I am using it on pedestrians (and there isn't normally time to get on the horn with peds). Ipodestrians are the worst offenders.

I find a hard thump with a fist or foot to the side of a car that gets too close always gets attention.

That can be an effective tactic, but bear in mind there are a tiny minority who can get so out of control of their tempers that they are prepared to knock you off or drive over you in retribution for such an action.

Just in my area there have been couple of cases of similar extreme rage in response to such perceived "insults" in the last few months (though not cyclists as victims), and though the guilty are currently in prison, it's not much consolation for the injured person, especially the one permanently injured.

As galling as it may be, I think it best to "let it go", rather than risk escalation.

I agree, there are some bad tempered drivers out there, so best not to take risks with them.

There was a recent case in Scotland where a driver attempted to kill (in the court's view) a cyclist who had tapped his rear wing to protest at being cut up. The driver, who is now in prison, said, to justify his behaviour, that he thought the cyclist had given him a v-sign. I had a driver swerve to try to knock me off a few weeks ago for nothing more than using the advanced stopping box at some lights.

If I feel a vehicle has come too close, I will usually mention it, politely, if I pass them again. Some are fine about it, some get abusive. I make a point of not getting into a discussion / argument, though.

Best thing to do is.. as they pass, wobble violently, keel over onto the pavement cluthching your heart.. and then accept any cash the driver offers..:D

Excellent suggestion :D

And if no cash is forthcoming a range of options spring to mind - having now had the opportunity to size the miserable miscreant up :D

Speaking of horns, when I had my 50cc Honda scooter, I took out the little "beep beep" horn and got a horn suitable for a large truck. In fact, it was too big to mount in the regular spot, so I mounted it on the front fender with the bell pointed mostly left and forward. That's because usually i was in the right (slow) lane here and all vehicles cutting too close would be on the left.

With the horn mounted like that, I could give them the loudest direct blast possible. I don't know how much good it did, but it gave me some satisfaction when someone nearly ran me over.
