The wife's Big Bear has developed an intermittant, but increasing, loud 'clack'. Forks and top bearing seem fine and, when riding alongside, the sound appears to be coming from the motor.
Assuming that it's bearings, I've got this far:

Removing the three central screws doesn't seem to get me anywhere.
How do I get to bearings and gears?
Anyone done it?

I doubt that there's anything wrong with the bearings. They rumble, not clack. Clacking normally has an electrical cause - something like the motor cable connector not pushed in far enough or a bad connection on the phase wwires at the controller. Tell us more about the clacking.

To get the motor core out, you rmove any nuts on the axle and tap it out with a mallet on the end of the axle. Wooden or rubber mallet is best to avoid damaging the threads, otherwise use a block of wood and hit it with something heavy. Don't forget to have something to catch it when it drops out!

One bearing is in the side-plate you've taken off. the other will be left in the far side of the hub when you get the axle out. the third one is in the middle of the motor. Dismantling that far is very tricky and not recommended, especially as it's very unlikely that there's anything wrong with it.

You're motor looks pretty clean. the only time I've seen bearings needing replacement is when the motor was full of water like this:

Hi Vfr
It's a loud dry sounding hollow aluminiumny sound.
3 pin plug and socket looks clean , no sign of heat damage.
I've found one bearing in the plate I've removed, it feels rough as.
Not sure how to get to the other side.

OK. Got the rotor out, other bearings feel fine.
In case it's useful to someone else, the faceplate bearing is 6002RS.

Just a few strip down pics in case they help anyone.

On the brake side, slide off the AR washer and undo the nut (it's only finger tight} then the axle can be pushed or tapped out, revealing the gears.

The planetary gears rotate on a bearing, in my case this one felt OK so don't know how that comes out. There is, apparently , a bearing in the centre of the rotor. Fortunately this also felt OK so didn't have to go there.
The bearing in the first face plate tapped out with a socket and hammer. Easily found one on t'internet for about £2.50
This motor's only done abot 3200 miles so I assume this was just a duff bearing.

The bearings aren't duff they just have a lot or pressure and work to maintain, my BPM hub (Big Bear kit) I had to service at 1600 miles because the end plate bearing was noisy and rough as buggery when I changed it.

The end plate bearing failure is normal, I have had it on my Bafang CST as well and the lid only requires six fixings to be undone drive out and replace the bearing and screw the lid back on. It doesn't take long.
With my cst as I replaced all four bearings for about a tenner as once open it makes sense to do them all.

I hope that was a reputable bearing manufacturer (FAG, SKF etc) you bought or you'll be back in there in a year.
Unfortunately they didn't say. First time I've ever bought bearings. Did look at stainless steel but, in my experience, ss is softer, so I rejected it.

So, bearing arrived and has been fitted (took about 10 minutes including motor reassembly).
One up for 'crappy' chinese motors, I'd say. Try doing this on a Bosch !
Thanks to this forum I knew bearings had numbers - never knew before.
And thanks to Ed China (Wheeler Dealers) I knew how to go about it.
A big win for garden shed engineering. Yay:cool:
