Hi, I have a BBS02B 48v 500w fitted to my bike with a 48v 22ah battery and C571-50-514 controller, the bike has never been ridden in the rain and never gotten wet.. The battery is contained in an aluminium triangular case and cannot be isolated (disconnected) from the motor (Silly, I know - I bought it secondhand - the PO built it like that).

I noticed recently that when I turn the headlight off and shut off the power at the handlebar switch - the headlight continued to glow for a few hours steadily decreasing in brightness until eventually going dark. This has me seriously concerned regarding charging/ storing my bike indoors. Any ideas what can be causing this ?

Then, last week out of the blue I have started having an intermittent 08H error. It comes and goes. Motor cuts out (pedal and throttle) and the screen (C965) displays only the motor symbol and "08H". If I turn the bike on and off a few times it returns to normal only to cut out again at a later stage.

My question is, are these two things related ?

I have not pulled the covers off yet and checked the connectors as im afraid that doing so without having isolated the battery may damage the components. I presume that disconnecting the battery is the first thing I should do or can I disconnect and reconnect the controller with the battery connected ?

Thanks for reading.

You won't do any damage messing about with connectors when the battery is switched on unless you put the wrong connectors together, though that's nearly impossible unless you're stupid because they're all different sizes and shapes. You will get a spark when you reconnect the battery. It's a bit frightening because it makes a "snap" noise as well, which can make you jump, but it's normal and nothing to worry about. None of the other connectors should dark.

Thanks for that, good to know.

I'm still at a loss as to the cause of my headlight staying on and gradually dimming after the unit is powered off and if it's related to the HES (08H) error.

Thanks again.

The headlight may have a capcitor inside and is simply dimming as the capcitor loses it's charge.

Thanks for your suggestion - but it only started doing it recently.
Until a few weeks back it went off when I turned it off.
Thanks again

It's possible that you have a problem with the BMS in the battery that's not switching off the MOSFETs properly. there's a transistor that switches a line with about 14v on it. When the MOSFETs get 14v on the gate leg (normally left when viiwed from front) they switch on between the middle and right legs, and when the transistor cuts the voltage to zero, the MOSFETs switch off. Maybe it's still providing some voltage , which is keeping the MOSFETs half switched on, or there's something else providing voltage to that line.

Something about it here if you can understand it, otherwise ask Google, "why are my MOSFETs leaking?"

Many thanks. If my Mosfets are leaking - is it dangerous ?

Regarding the 08H error, I removed and stripped the motor, removed the Hall effect board and re-soldered all connections ... cycled 15 miles - problem cured.

Thanks for the replies guys, great resource
