Hi,

I'm finding this really difficult, so many options, variations and bikes to choose from.......

I've tried to come up with some requirements to narrow down the bike choice:-

Must have a throttle
Crank or hub motor
Legal but be capable of being put in a higher power output mode for trails and then back again for road use
Range to manage my commute 26 miles ones way with minimal effort (can charge at work)
Easily removable battery for charging
Mountain bike style - mens frame type
Budget up to £2200ish
Relatively light comparatively

Any pointers on bike options meeting the above would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.
Rob.

Unfortunately that's an Oxymoron _ I think :)

Nothing with a high-output mode is legal, even if you don't use it.

Other than that, You'd be hard put to better an Ezee bike for grunt, or the Oxygen mtb.

If you must have a throttle that makes your choice much easier as it rules out virtually all European made bikes. You therefore won't need to spend anything like £2200. At least, I can't think of a bike with a throttle for over £2000 - most will be considerably less. The Oxygen MTB is definitely not a commuter but if that's the style you like it's worth a look. (The specs do not confirm if it has a throttle but I think it does)

Thanks for the responses.

Is it possible to convert these bikes to run in a higher power mode (unrestricted)? I saw something about bosch? motors where you could put some kind of key in and out to convert it to higher power output?

Thanks.

Bikes with Bosch motors (none of these have a throttle) can be fitted with a 'dongle' to trick the controller into allowing higher speeds. I have also seen adverts for similar devices for Kalkhoff Impulse motors, again none of these have throttles. Many Asian made bikes will have a control panel (LCD) that will allow the user to set / reset the cut-off speed, sometimes by using a 'hidden' sequence or code. These don't give more power as such, just adjust the speed at which the motor stops providing assist (legally 15.5mph).

All Oxygens have throttles. The one on the MTB is a bit different to others in that you have to have it in level 6 to get maximum speed from it. It still works

The speed limit in most Chinese bikes, including Oxygens, can be released by pressing a few buttons in the LCD.

Bosch bikes need something that reduces the number of pulses from the speed sensor. You can't increase the power of a Bosch system. It only allows the motor to continue running above 15 mph.

Hi Rob.

Just to be clear, because no one else has mentioned it yet. Offroad or onroad the bikes are still illegal.

They can only be used in the UK on private land. If you are thinking of using an illegal bike in the UK either on or offroad, please make sure your insurance covers you in the event of an accident.

Tom
