2 observations with our bikes.

Cruising along on my less than 70km Alpino with the power on is fine.
When I switch the power off, I feel a distinct drag for a minute or two as I continue to pedal untill it clears then I can pedal as normal. Is this normal?
It feels as tho the brakes are on (which they are not) or the motor is slightly dragging.
As I said it clears after a time and then freewheels as normal or pedalling continues as normal

The wifes 705 seems fine with switching off the motor.
Only complaint/observation from SWMBO is the gear selection lever is easier to operate on my Alpino than on her bike. She has to remove her hand from the grip to operate gear lever with her finger when dropping a gear- small hands!
With my alpino she can safely operate the gear lever with thumb and index finger keeping her hand on the grip. Don't want an accident as she has had both hips replaced and I can't cook !!!

Can the Alpino gear lever be retro fitted to her 705? What would be the cost?

Same experience with my 2 month old 905se sport. Definite drag for a few minutes after switching off the power which is annoying.

I've never tried turning the motor off whilst riding but I've never noticed any drag when riding with the motor off or when I exceed the motor speed, I'll try it later on to see.
The Alfine shifter goes with the Alfine hub and AFAIK it can't be used with anything else, what sort of gears does the 705 have?

The 905 has a different motor and the drag is more noticable than with the Dapu mators on the Alpino models, I don't like riding either with the power off but I found it very hard to ride past the maximum motor speed on the 905se, the 906 is much easier in that respect. In practice it makes little difference to my journey times so it's a bit of a non issue.

Shimano 7 speed......705
Shimano Alfine.........Alpino

SWMBO finds it difficult pushing down to 1/2/3 gears - higher gears are in reach with her thumb. She rarely gets past 3rd gear.

As for the Alpino motor drag.........I switch off the motor when cruising along on the flat or downhill as it is not needed. I only switch it back on when nearing an hill.
As I switch the motor off after the incline, I can definately feel it drag for a time.

Just curious as to this being a fault?

if its the same shifter as the 905, is it not possible to move its position nearer to the handlebar (or is it already as near as it will go?)

Lever is as close as it can go.
She can operate the gear levers on my Alpino lever much easier.

Waiting on David from Wisper to comment on motor drag!

I know what you mean, the Alfine shifter is daintier and requires less effort but unfortunately won't fit. The good news is there are different shifters available for the Shimano 7 speed, it may even be changed to a twist grip.

Any answer to the motor drag!

Yes, the Alpino gear lever is much better.
I think SWMBO would prefer it fitted to her 705.

Still curious as to the motor drag on my Alpino being normal or a fault

drag on Alpino

Still curious as to the motor drag on my Alpino being normal or a fault
Hi all I am surprised Wisper havent come back to you with an explation about the drag on bike when freewheeling. I cannot understand why there is any drag on a brushless motor ,I have a City s which I have traded for the Alpino , so I am hoping there will be no drag ,I have found it very hard to pedal the bike with the battery flat or turned off . All though I think if you take out the battery the resistance is not as bad. Can anyone throw any ligh on this . ???????????

I swapped from a City-s to a 906 Aplino, I noticed the drag on the 905 as I was almost unable to cycle above the motor speed. Now on the 906 I can ride well above the top motor speed even going uphill and I don't notice any motor drag. It's still a heavy bike so won't feel good to ride without power.

I have now tried turning off the power whilst riding and didn't notice any drag, I did it near the maximum motor speed so that the motor wasn't giving a lot of assistance but was pulling it's own weight. I'll try and remember to do this at lower speeds on the way home to see if it's different. As for the drag changing if the battery is taken out, I can only think that it makes the bike a fair bit lighter and just feels better for it.

I've been waiting for a couple of days to get an answer

Hi I think David from Wisper should try and answer this question
Q Is it a fault or is this normal?

My bike is a 706 Alpino........with only 90km

Perhaps if I keep asking then I'll get an answer.........

Thanks David ......I appreciate your input after reading all the posts.

Perhaps you can shed light to the motor drag on my 'new' Alpino

Is it a Fault or is this normal.

Hi again, I have just realised that maybe you have not asked the question of anyone within Wisper or one of our dealers, maybe you have simply posted on Pedelecs? Is this the case?

If so, as much as I love to be involved on the Pedalecs site, you will have to excuse me if and when I am away for a few days. I make the very unusual step to publish my private mobile telephone number in my signature to make certain if anyone needs to contact me urgently they can do so.

Regarding the drag that can be felt on the Dapu motor, I can not be 100% sure but I imagine that whilst there is some charge left in the motor is will work against you once this charge has been dissipated the drag will all but disappear. On the less expensive Bafang motor you may notice some drag, this is found on all Bafang motors and is not unusual. The reason we have so many levels of assistance is that when the bike is turned down to minimum assist the bike will perform very much like a lighter weight non assisted bicycle. I would suggest that instead of turning off the power all together try riding on the flat and down hill in minimum assist. You will loose very little range by doing this.

EDIT Thinking this through, of course when you reach the top speed of the motor you will feel some drag. As I say, I will spek to the Japanese tomorrow and report back.

I hope this has helped.

All the best

David

Sorry, forgot to say, I will speak to Dapu tomorrow and get their opinion, Being quite heavy I dont notice any drag on the Dapu (and very little on the Bafang it has to be said). I have not heard of this before so please accept my apologies not being able to answer without taking advice!

All the best
