Hi I am a 72 year old cyclist in Canberra, Australia. I gave up cycling a few years back when my wind and my knees went. I bought an electric bike and have had great success .

I would like to update to a kalkhoff Agattu, probably an Impulse, but have 2 problems. Maximum electric motor size in this country is imited to 200 watts and the Kalkhoffs are 250 watts. Also, there are no Kalkhoff dealers in Australia. Is there by any chance anybody out there who has got round these problems?

One solution suggested by a bike shop here was to register it as a motor vehicle and put licence plates on it, but I would not then be able to use it on cycle paths, where I ride most of the time.

Replies greatly appreciated.

There really is no way round this one, it's prevented the Panasonic unit bikes entering Australia for years. As you probably know the authorities there are very serious about the regulation. The State of Victoria has proposed adopting the EU style 250 watt limit instead which I understand they are entitled to do independently, but many e-bikers there are strongly opposed since it would also mean banning throttles and having pedelec only.
