November 28, 20241 yr Hi Thought to post a thread before I get some professional help which I think I may need. Just bought this bike on e bay Giant FastRoad E+1 Pro Electric Bike - 1376577306 I think it’s new but I bought it in need of repair. Please see attached photo more to follow. Bike turns on but cuts out randomly ! - Giant have done a diagnostic's test on the bike and they have said the motor and the battery are fine - could be the controller or comms ! As an amateur but with some skill I would think to First check for loose connection s After that could I get some help . With next steps before I find a professional who may be able to do a proper fault find ? I am assuming the controller is combined with the motor if it turned out to be a fault does any one know if this can be sorted by an engineer or if a controller can be bought separately. I am due to get the bike this morning so can post better pictures and information once I have the bike. Cheers Baz
November 28, 20241 yr Buyer beware scenario with a closed system branded bike and more so with Giant , they use there own proprietary software on the system so only a Giant dealer will be able to source and replace. The fact it is a used ebay item may mean it carries no warranty, if so then it might be an expensive repair . Soundwave may be able to allude to whether his favourite mid drive repair shop can help out or not. Edited November 28, 20241 yr by Nealh
November 28, 20241 yr After it turns on, and before it randomly cuts out, does it operate as expected and ride as it should? If yes, are there any common factors around the cutoff time? Bumps? Hills? High/low assist level?
November 28, 20241 yr Author I may be a bit premature with post just waiting for fed ex to deliver it , then I will road test it and post again. My initial thoughts are it will need a professional repair as the bike shop have had a Giant done diagnostic's test. My best guess is it will need someone who is able to diagnose and fix the controller or with luck it may just be a poor connection. Looking for any recommendations London area or if needs be I can send the motor for repair . I will contact soundwave .

Unless you find a physical problem with it, you have virtually no chance unless you're good at reverse engineering CANbus stuff. If by "cuts out randomly", you mean the LCD goes off and stays off, it could be a simple connection issue between the battery and the motor or a dodgy cable to the LCD or the cable that goes to the LCD pulled so that a wire is broken inside the insulation. You'd probably get an error code if the comms shut it down, so I think it's more likely to be a connection issue. Edited November 28, 20241 yr by saneagle
November 28, 20241 yr Author Thanks Saneagle Just took it out for a Road test I can not find a fault so far it a super light bike to ride really happy with it so far. I will take it out again and find some hills and put it under some pressure and see if it cuts out. There is no LCD pls see photo so not sure yet where an error code would be shown , I will have to get a manual. And I need to get a charger. Need to go to work now to get some cash in to pay for it
November 28, 20241 yr On a limited led handlebar display/button pad, error codes are often a pattern of leds flashing in a sequence. and the manual should list them i detail. often there ar 2x manuals 1) a quick start guide and 2) a detailed manual. including the keyword '.pdf' in your google search will list the page count of relevant results
November 28, 20241 yr Giant charger won't be cheap as battery is CANbus, the bike should come with a charger.
November 28, 20241 yr Author Thanks guys Saneagle & Nealth : I bought the bike sold as seen as parts the charger was not included in the sale so far fingers crossed I am hoping some one has returned the bike and it may not have a fault. It was cheap enough to be able to buy an original charger from Giant. If it turns out to have an intermittent fault it really is so easy and light to ride with no power assist even for an out of shape 60 year old ! So no worries but I will still go down the repair road and try to learn more if it is faulty. Thelaekbox : yes I thought too that the lights may double up as messages or fault codes I will down load a user manual and have a good read and post information. The bike retails at around 2.5 K and it really is a nice bit of kit the wife has declared it to be hers now LOL that said I am really happy with the Classic Giant / YOSE I built as it only cost me 400 odd and some time. But at the moment with London roads speed bumps , pot holes and Chelsea Tractors that insist on driving down the middle of small roads so they do not have to drive over a speed hump straight at a bike I think I will make a custom build Carrera that will suit my weight and shite roads better. We are thinking about trying to organise a sort of Pedelechs road trip possibly on part of the HCM trail in Vietnam and filming it a bit like a Top Gear type adventure. Thinking about Saigon up to the Central Highlands it’s just a pipe dream at the moment but who knows it might just get done. The wife wants to do it and we can get massive support from our family and friends over there. Just waiting as Vietnam is just announcing changes to there electric bike or motor bike regulations we are going this January so I am going to see if it can be done. Home built MTB’s only !!!!
November 28, 20241 yr find a giant dealer that has the software its the only way to see if there is a fault or not. no 3rd party repair is available for giant systems out of warranty and only replacements like motors at rip off prices , i hope it was cheap.

Can't take a normal sized ebike battery on a plane....
November 29, 20241 yr Author Thanks sound wave yes it was cheap from a reputable company. It’s worth what I paid as a normal bike. Going to test it out more today so far no red lights coming on . I could get my money back and more selling it as parts if needs be , But I like a can not be done challenge too with things like this and like to try and overcome them . We are going to get kits sent to VN when we go this January as they are making the electric bikes no pedals into Motor bikes that need a driving licence I think there peddalechs are the same laws as us or other countries we are just waiting till January to see how they change the laws over there. So we are thinking about renting out Pedelechs to tourists in Saigon . But it is One country where you must obey traffic laws as you will have to give the cops your money very quickly on the spot if you do not .

You simply must to aligne the magnet in the right posotion respect the speed sensr
November 29, 20241 yr Author Hi dgiannon thanks I will have a look at that . Took it out today rides really well no cutting out or red lights . It threw the chain off so I need to find the chain tensioner as it has too much slack . I also had to register it with the Giant shop in Camden Town so they will tell me exactly which battery charger I need to buy I have a good idea but thought may as well double check. And I have asked them if I change the led control to the one that has the usb port if it will work with the Giant app. Just waiting for them to get back to me
November 30, 20241 yr Good luck in VN, but think long n hard about adding further complication to the proprietary control system adding any form of app and online dependency is unlikely to make anything easier imho.
November 30, 20241 yr Author Thanks I will post some photos in January. VN Going back to the battery charger Giant shop in London not coming back to me with a part number for the charger I have just attached the battery details I think because the bike was not bought from them or a main dealer. It probably went to an Auction house my sister used to be the buyer for one in Manchester they used to source stock from all the big high street names ie John Lewis for example. Can any one recommend an after market charger that will give the battery a safe charge ? plug in and go I do not really want to mess about changing plugs even if it can be done. I think I have found an original just waiting for the shop to get back to me.

Did they tell you that it's on the database for being nicked?
November 30, 20241 yr Author No I gave them the frame number ECT and have registered the bike and showed them e bay proof of purchase Moose e bikes and scooters are the sellers they have a lot of high end bikes for sale on and off usually sold for parts only or bits missing. I am covered on e bay as I have bought it in good faith from the owner , The bike was originally sold in electric warehouse I have checked. If it did turn out to be stolen the owner will get his bike back and I will get my money back. So no worries I used to buy a lot of ex display or returned items at auction a lot of the big players just ship them off there as they only want to sell new with warranty’s
November 30, 20241 yr Author I have also checked it out on the national bike site so no results or not known to be stolen .

What was their reason for not selling you the charger?
November 30, 20241 yr As we have alluded to, one will need a specific CANbus charger as it has more then two pins for comms, a generic £10 - £15 jobbie won't cut the mustard so expect to pay over £100.
November 30, 20241 yr Author The reason they needed the frame number is to check whether it's on the nicked database. What was their reason for not selling you the charger? No Andy the guy in Giant Shop Camden Town said “ Because of bike thefts they will not give any details on there system until the bike is registered with them with proof of purchase” He said that his system was greyed out and he could not get any information. And asked me to e mail him details which I have now done . But like you I am now a little concerned as I found it quite easy to find original chargers sold by bike shops that I think will work I just want to be sure . Tomorrow or Monday I will contact Moose Bikes and ask them for proof of legal ownership or provenance so I can then forward this to Giant , I have already given them copies of my e bay receipts that have been paid with my Credit card. I hope your fears that it’s stolen are wrong but if you are correct then the legal owner will get his or hers bike back and I would be happy for them as the last thing I would want is to be riding around on a stolen bike . I am sure it can be sorted out this week . But that said when I went back to Saint Luke’s as in previous posts to get the battery for the Giant Prime they asked me for a further 50 quid for the charger as they wanted to sell it separately on e bay . Which I gave them . If I can not sell this bike whole I will look at selling it in bits as there is a good market for SH original spares. Good SH original chargers are easy to sell and sell quickly . So it’s not that uncommon for a bike or battery not to be sold with or without the charger.
