Just to clarify the different opinions on CANbus.

Are we saying that with the battery removed from the bike and plugged directly into an original giant charger with the adapter that it still may not charge ?

So the charger and battery working independently off the bike will not work unless giant link them with a code ?

Because the motor , battery, charger. And so controller are all linked by CANbus software that will not let any of the parts work independently?

You'll know more when you buy a Giant charger.

My Shimano bike is part of a community scheme containing Yamaha, Giant, Bosch and Shimano systems. My direct experience is mainly Shimano, but when borrowing other bikes short term with different motors, there is no worry about which charger accompanies which bike.

Bosch do some funny stuff between display and motor, @Shockwave can tell you more about that, but Giant just do a smart charger and a fast charger, no mention of any dealer intervention needed to make them work together.

I have three chargers and five batteries and two motors in my Shimano collection, any combination works. I'm pretty certain you can buy a charger, see it work and stop worrying about that aspect of the bike!

Giant use there own software so any other Bosh peripherals will be incompatible, which means also chargers.
It is a cash cow to prevent owners using non Giant dealers .

Yes, that's a possibility. You can check that with the Giant dealer.

I have found a shop selling original smart charger for around 90 quid with the direct to battery lead once I check with them it’s compatible I will get one and start from there .

Also my cousin in Amersham who is part of a cycle group that rides the off road trails in Buckinghamshire is going to ask his friends who all had high end bikes stolen on a day ride trip to London if any of them have Giant charger left over.

Around five 3K plus bikes went very quickly whilst they went for a cup of tea , luckily they all had insurance that has now paid out .

And they all had the insurance approved locks .

No help so far from all the cameras that coin it in in fines !!! Catching the thieves.

I have suggested they join us on here.

Let you know how the fast Road issues goes in the coming days.

I bought a 2023 Carrera Vengeance today 90 miles on it looks like brand new .

I have the original receipt from Halfords a bill of sale and paid by bank transfer.

I am going to strip out all the e Carrera parts , ship it to Vietnam with some more I will source.

Then get kits to fit over there to hire out to Tourists in Saigon probably go with YOSE or KT

Who knows HCM trail here we come !!!!!

Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to buy buy ready-made ebikes in Saigon to hire out? What are the rules there on burning down a house when the battery catches fire on a modified bike?

Lots of info on canbus, BUT its just the protocol same one used in cars . Bike manufacturers that use it employ a closed/private communication code. So while reading the canbus signals is documented all over the web and anyone with an evening and an arduino can have a go decoding the specific codes is a mammoth cracking job not yet undertaken by anyone afaik,

canBUS can't cycle. I know a dude who installs Ghost Immobilisers on many models of high end cars. They function because enough canBUS messages have been cracked by Russian hackers. Whenever he encounters a new car they haven't got codes cracked for, they bring in a crack Russian hacker who plugs his laptop into the car, and watches as his software selects cracked codes to try, to make a new immboliser.

Last time we was over there we did not really see much in the way of our style of Pedelechs just the electric bikes without pedals.

It funny really they want western brands like Giant and Trek for example , my wife and her family usually steer clear of China products but like Japanese ie Honda and Yamaha.
And a cup of real coffee is still 50p if you do not go to Starbucks .

The wife would just send Giant , Trek and all the other top brands I am looking for a good work horse The Carrera fits the bill but as they are made in Thailand bet you can not buy them there.

They like Bentley and Jags but most of all Range Rovers and Toyota Land Cruiser’s in a country that has 100% Car tax and does not manufacture cars !

I think there will be a niche market soon for high end branded. e bike]s but the vast majority will be the cheaper china imports out in the country side where there is a lot of poverty but there is also a lot of wealth in some areas that like brands.

They do not have any thing like British Standard on the electrical work and I do worry when I stay at the family’s shop and student accommodation.

Fire regs are a bit like the Wild West until some thing goes wrong then either money is paid or someone goes to jail so there is that type of undercurrent that tourists do not see a bit like Thailand but they are much stricter on alcohol, drugs and the sex trade which are fully underground .

But we have plans to bring the old family building up to code once some issues are resolved .
My wife has a very good circle of family and friends over there from the Mekong up to the central highlands .

I went there after watching the Topgear Vietnam special Two year after my first wife passed , never thought I would end up getting married .

If we ever do rent out e bikes it will only be to tourists at the moment or any one else would have to leave the full amount of deposit for the full value of the bike as it would just go missing.
But VN is a perfect place to cycle around as when you need to stop and park you just give one of the very many bike / car parks very little money to park with security looking after your bike , motor bike or car
So no stress parking I think we could learn something here especially parking of bikes and e bikes ie going into shop or eat out.

I think the Carrera with imported YOSE or Bafang kits would work but that said I think once the clamp down starts on e bikes without peddle’s in January the obvious next step is the country will flood with cheap Pedelechs like here .

Tourism is safe if you behave and don’t take the Michael and the people are some of the friendliest I have come across I call them the Irish of Asia because of the warm welcome I have received when travelling over there from friends and family, I was married in Saigon in 2014.

That’s interesting we have to fit steering locks on our cars where I live people are just able to get into the motors at will and defeat the security system s .

But going back to e bikes with high end anti theft software I suppose the thieves are already working out how to defeat them .

I am up for breaking extortion on closed or CANbus systems as in my opinion it’s used not only for protection but to create an expensive closed shop and stops free legitimate trade.

The Yanks are the best at this practice .

The one China brand I was looking at pre Covid is Leichten bikes just add . Com for the website .

Have a look and some opinions would be good to hear .

As I said previously I was looking at them and plans to go visit the factory in China just as Covid stopped our travel plans. but the lead time was long and initial investment was out of reach with all the uncertainty back then.

They have done well in the years since Covid not so much in the UK.

So they would be a VN option if we put in a bigger investment but for now we just want to test the ideas with 4 or five bikes .

any batt/bms charger that needs can bus coms is not worth the hassle as a batt can be recelled if it charges and working and given the labour cost you will save around 100 quid if that.

my bosch motor is now not supported so even tho i can get a new smart frame batt and change the connector it wont work.

if you cant fix it it goes in to the bin! bosch ect as wont even sell you the parts to fix it if you could as to dangerous and to stupid

Yes as said I like my Giant with the YOSE kit I have built , But now I am riding more to help myself get fitter if I can not get my money back selling it I am going to strip the e kit back of it and customise one of the Carreras for my own use thinking about riser handlebars, seat suspension and possibly changing the front forks to a 29 inch wheel back wheel 27.5 as I like sitting us straight like the lime bike or Giant Prime but I still want to go over speed humps , potholes and up kerbs so would like the best of both designs.
