I'd get into trouble if I carried a small car's width of horizontal pool noodle on the rear rack, but I have considered it...

I wish! Terrifying on UK roads, is cycling - the SUVs are the worst! They speed past you far too close, and the turbulence they leave in their wake drags you sideways, like lorries do.
I once rode from the Glenbrittle campsite on the Isle of Skye to Portree(The islands capital)
It was the most terrifying journey ive ever ridden.

Most traffic passes you at 80-90+mph and you dont hear them coming. All of a sudden WHOOOSH as it slams past.
It was so bad I took an expensive taxi for the return trip.

It left me feeling great sadness and respect for people who bike tour in the UK, they must get that all the time.

...and they ALL think they're as skillful as Stirling Moss when they zoom past and overtake, planting themselves in front of you, with a few feet to spare - but they very often underestimate your ebike's speed - several times recently cars have tried to overtake me, only to screech to a halt as they realised they didn't have room - faced with a car travelling at them. I'm thankful they stopped rather than veer left to run me over! And if they did actually crash, I'd likely be damaged, depending on how the crash unfolded so close to me. It's also happened in front of those blasted small islands in the road which are absolutely everywhere, which leave no space for bikes... they're about a car's width and not much more. When faced with a likely collision (attempting to overtake my ebike) with a traffic island at night on a clear road, I've had cars briefly drive on the other side of the road. And I stick to the legal 15MPH!
