Can any one recommend a service manual where I can pick up the basics on bike maintenance? Picked up rear brake pads from LBS and fitted them myself but could not adjust them properly. So took the bike to LBS (De Ver) and they tut tutted and laughed as I had apparently put them on up side down. When I said I had a loose spoke on front wheel and had tightened it, but the wheel was now creaking a bit....much sucking of breath and slow nodding of heads from the pair of them."Best to leave it to them that knows what they are doin" was forthcoming.

so I left the bike with them (my 905SE) But want to learn the basics, so a recommended read would be of graet help please, illustrations would be useful as well:)

They now have some Giant electric bikes on show in the shop which is surprising as they are a bit hard core in there......

When I have struggled I merely get on line and google the problem/task. Even seen some great bike DIY vids on youtube.

The last time was when I was trying to figure out how to dismantle my chain. Last time I took a chain off it had a link with a clip on it. Went on line and learnt all about taking out a pin from a link after buying the little tool that is needed. Watched several good youtube vids too.

That kind of response from a LBS would have me leaving never to return

If I'm gonna do this I guess I will need a bike stand to get it up of the floor...

any recommendations for a stand as well please?

have been reading through some internet bike manuals but it would be nice to have the book next to me in the garage while I am operating:eek:

I don't know if this is any help or has general application, but there's one for Kalkhoff bikes that covers a lot of maintenance procedures, please PM me if you'd like me to send you a link to it.

Now that type of response would have me returning to my LBS ;)

I've been using "The Complete Do-it-yourself Bike Book" by Mel Allwood.
Very good for the bicycle parts of my electric bikes as it is up to date compared to my old Richards Bicycle Book and Mel(anie) explains things carefully with lots of photos.

To be honest for what I need I now realise that between the internet and you tube I can find the basic stuff which is all I need, thanks for the links!:)

for instance, how to adjust shimano gears:

I have the Haynes Manual, the Total Bike Repair and maintenance Bikeradar book (£10.99 from Sainsburys (very good)) the owners manual and the internet. To be honest I find the videos on the internet the most helpful.

Yes I have learnt a lot yesterday watching a few youtube videos on adjusting dérailleurs:)

But I will need a bike stand......Any recommendations for a stand capable of taking the weight of an E Bike?
