BH Emotion bikes have been with us in the UK for some time now but although I have looked at some of their models from time to time, I hadn't quite realised how extensive their range of bikes has become.

From this one manufacturer, we can choose between hub or crank drive and while we can select Panasonic or Bosch for the latter, their Neo hub-drive system is much praised. Between the various motive systems, there are several different styles and there has to be, dare I say, an ebike for just about everyone in their range.

Equipment and component levels seem reasonable to me at the money asked so they ought not to be dismissed lightly by anyone seeking a decent quality, powerful machine a little beyond the bargain basement end of the market.

This link gives some insight into what is available.

Yes, I am keen to try out one of these bikes. However I'd put them near the top end of the market; I've a (slightly flexible) budget of £1,500 and their bikes tend to come in closer to the £1,900 mark. But they look lightweight and resilient, have good warranties, and their range (if correct) appears to be twice what the sub-£1000 hub bikes will generally do (which is what I'm used to).

Might fish around for some good condition ex-demo versions or something :)

We could sort you out with a Kalkhoff for that money, we have a few ex-demo 2012 models with the new Impulse motor, software and long-range battery.

Something like the Agattu C8 HS perhaps Electric Bikes - Commuting - 2012 Kalkhoff Agattu C8 Impulse HS only £1795 new now. It'll have any BH bike for breakfast. :p

One of my favorite companies that have a large range, but offer very well spec'd bikes for the money is KTM. In any side by side comparison of similar bikes they tend to be better IMO

We are just down the road from you in Kidderminster if you fancy trying some of the Emotion bikes-

Like you say, they may well be above budget for you,but you are still welcome to come and have a play with the different models if you like, and see what's available in the different ranges.

It might help you determine which second hand bike to go for....

Tim, thanks - interesting. I've tended to find the Kalkhoff's a bit plain-looking, but I know that's heresy here :) and that they're very well-regarded bikes. I'd like to come to see your ex-demo units, but should think they're in London rather than Loughborough?

I don't know generally how ex-demo bikes are sold - I saw one recently where the full manufacturer's warranty was still in place. Would you offer the same here? Would local support be covered by your Loughborough centre, or can any Kalkhoff-approved centre be used?

Hi Halfer.

While I'm not entirely convinced by Tim Snaith's claim about the Agattu........

I certainly think Kalkhoff ebikes are fantastic machines and very reasonably priced at the moment from 50Cycles....well, some of them are!

That said, I think equally that BH offer pretty fair value for money with their range and Martin's offer,

is welcome. Can't say fairer than that!

Each of those brands offer some models which are lighter than the average and come equipped with powerful, legal, (well, most are!) motors and you should have no worries with warranty claims or support, given the track record of their UK outlets.

I would much rather buy a good used bike then a new bargain basement one. I started of with a used Wisper, ran it for 18 months and sold it for £50 less then what I paid.
