Anyone know what's going on at 50Cycles. Just had an email that they are no longer supplying Ezee replacement batteries, and all enquiries to be directed to the factory. (ezeebikes@gmail.com)
I would be interested in other owners' experiences with replacements as the Li-ion on my Cadence is getting pretty ropey after less than 2 years and 2200 miles.

Sale of Goods Act

Under the Sale of Goods act, the retailer who sold you the goods NOT the manufacturer is responsible for replacements/repairs under guarantee. Should the retailer fail to honor the act you are quite within your rights to take the retailer to the small claims court and ask for redress. Making a Claim

Making a claim
If someone owes you money and you cannot settle things in any other way, you may decide to issue a claim through the county court. People also issue claims for other reasons, including:

bad workmanship;
damage to their property;
road traffic accidents;
personal injury;
goods not supplied; and
faulty goods
County courts deal with all these types of claim. You will sometimes hear people talk about the 'small claims court'. What they really mean is the special procedure for handling smaller claims in a county court.

Going to court should always be the last resort. There are now a number of other ways of sorting out complaints, disputes and legal problems without court action, including arbitration, mediation and ombudsmen schemes These are often called alternative dispute resolution (ADR) schemes.

Court rules require you to think about whether alternative dispute resolution is a better way to reach an agreement before going to court.

Some claims can be made online using Money Claim Online

There are time restrictions for issuing claims. If you have delayed issuing proceedings for any reason, you may wish to seek legal advice before issuing your claim.

If you wish to proceed with a claim, or wish to defend a claim the following leaflets are available:

Stage 1: How to make a claim
Making a claim? Some questions to ask yourself (Leaflet EX301)

How to make a claim (Leaflet EX302)

Debt recovery for businesses (Leaflet EX350)

Stage 2: The defendant's response
A claim has been made against me - What should I do? (Leaflet EX303)

No reply to my claim form - what should I do? (Leaflet EX304)

The defendant disputes all or part of my claim (Leaflet EX306)

The defendant admits my claim - I claimed a fixed amount of money (Leaflet EX309)

The defendant admits my claim - I did not claim a fixed amount of money (Leaflet EX308)

Stage 3: Allocation to case track
The small claims track (Leaflet EX307)

The fast track and the multi track (Leaflet EX305)

That is correct Tony. Following a falling out between the parties, you need to use that route for the time being. The service is good though,TNT courier in around 48 hours and the prices very reasonable. There will be a new distributor soon, but 50cycles are refusing to allow that without a negotiated settlement, while also unable to give the service.

The early Li-ion batteries were quite poor and you've done well to get two years, the trouble with Li-ion being the age with time whether used or not. However, the present batteries are improved so you should get a better result this time round.

staffsfc: As a consumable, the battery had a six month warranty which is legal, so a claim after nearly two years wouldn't be possible I'm afraid.

One thing to note though is that if you do order from China, the process is quick and easy, however, be prepared for a Customs bill - I had to pay an extra £40 - the bill comes after the goods are delivered by TNT.

I think that was for a battery and charger though Jeanette?

The price currently quoted for a Li-ion easily takes care of a customs charge, leaving the cost still favourable. Was that so in your case with the NiMh battery and charger?

I'd guess £40 customs charges (17% VAT + 8% import duty) makes the ex- China price of the Battery + Charger about £160. I do recall Mr Ching saying he would supply a free charger to any Li-ion users wishing to convert to Ni-Mh so it's probable that cost is for the battery alone making the cost with shipping similar to what a UK supplier would charge if any where available.

You're right Flecc, it was in fact for two Nimh batteries and chargers, Mr Ching did say he planned to despatch them in separate packages to avoid the Import Duty, however, in the event they all came in one - I was still very happy with the outcome.

That's good Jeanette, thanks for the response. Of course, I'd forgotten it was for the two bikes.

That's my main concern, that owners get a satisfactory and economic service during this difficult period.

Thanks for the advice everbody. I have just emailed ezeebikes to see what the options are - I'm not sure whether to change to a NiMH or to trust that the new Li-ions have better longevity. Any further advice welcome.

The new batteries are very much better than the old ones. Mine was one of the first of the new batch with improved bms bought in November 2007. I have done about 800 miles and the battery is showing no signs of losing its capacity yet. I have had two before this one so am reasonably experienced and can say that both the others would be cutting out by now (on long hills anyway). The last battery I had was truly awful and I strongly suspect the cells are very much better on the latest batteries. Only time will tell I am afraid but I am doing my best to put on as many miles as possible on this battery.

I am still waiting for the promised replacement for the original duff battery but no joy from 50 cycles or Ezee so far.

I thing you will need to email Wai Won again on this Hal. He is aware that a few have picked up a battery or had one within the six month warranty, but probably won't know who of those waiting hasn't got one yet. He told me that regardless of those sent to 50cycles he will honour his promise to them.

Yes I did email him last weekend but I know he was away for some of that time - I'll give him until after the easter break before pestering him again.

He might also be waiting to send the latest type which are barely through yet Hal, as he's been trying one out and found it performed well on his 1000 km ride which included a climb up to a plateau area.

Now that is very exciting - the new ones are certainly an improvement but it would be great to get the latest version that you have been raving about.

Even better would be the future prototype if it lasts well, since that is really something else. ;)

Sadly that will have to wait awhile. After the experiences with the early battery, no-one is going to take any risks without stringent testing.
