Most metric screw threads have at least two pitch options, coarse and fine.

Most bike axles use a fine thread because that means the core diameter is larger and so the axle is stronger. Most general purpose applications use the coarse thread, so often you have to seek out the fine version.

For M16, coarse thread is 2mm pitch, fine is 1.5mm. Measure longitudinally over several threads and see if yours matches. 10 threads is either 15 or 20mm length if it is M16.

Alternatively, 16mm is 5/8 inch, and inches are standard in USA and Canada for many purposes.

Searching for 'M16 fine nut' will get you nuts, the rest you might have to improvise.
