I have been using 5 poles PAS from BMSbattery and I have noticed they start selling different poles like 8 10 12.

Is there any advantage if I use them (maybe 12 poles) over my 5 poles PAS?

Thanks
Pat

Very good question. I guess it depends on the software in the controller. For some, it probably won't make a difference, but others have a power profile that is related to cadence (cadence is measured by the rate of pulsing), so the controller will think you're pedalling faster, so will give high power faster if that's what you want. Other controllers might count the pulses and start when they count enough, so you'd get quicker response with more magnets. Maybe there's other reasons, but I can't think of any.

So the controllers need to get so many pulses before powering the motor? One thing that's bothered me is what if I'm stopped without holding the brake and flick the pedals back a touch and get a pulse signal sent, does the power kick in straight away ?

You don't get pulses when you turn the pedals backwards because the magnets only switch the sensor when they pass in one direction.

Different controllers have different software, so the delay after starting pedalling and stopping pedalling is different.
