Kona Hei Hei 29 Bafang 250W 36V Build Thread

So my wife tried it today and, apart from learning when to change gear :), it went well. I've just tried accessing the firmware and decided to set most of the settings in line with the Karl's Special Sauce profile. The battery cut-off was set to 31V already which seemed fine to me so I left...

Thanks, I'll watch out for that but hopefully the velcro will prevent it or a could add a couple of patches of the opposite velcro. It's more solid than I expected. The zip on the bag broke but a replacement is coming.

All went great on the test ride. There were a few more challenges than I expected but the end result is great fun. Trouble is I want one now too. Now to find out/work out the best firmware adjustments to make for this style of bike and get out and enjoy it.

    12. Then all that was left was to attach the chain ring, chain, cranks, and pedals. The chain turned out to be the correct size without any adjustment. I had so slightly longer Ti bolts around that I used, longer ones being required as I added two 2mm spacers before the chain ring. I was...

    8. The gear cable normally runs under the top tube with an exposed central section then down the top tube of the rear triangle. The cable length was a little short to place at the rear and I felt the sensor would be better protected under the top tube so I added a gear cable outer and a couple...

    6. Cockpit initial setup. A bit of neoprene added to protect the Scandium frame a bit. It is also helitaped. I don't know if this was a good idea or not. 7. I now moved onto the brake sensors. I ended up cutting some pieces off joinery spacers and sticking with 3M tape and placing on...

Kona Hei Hei 29 Bafang 250W 36V Build Thread

So thanks again for everyone who helped with all my pre conversion questions. Apart from tweaking the firmware, I finished the build on Saturday and took it for a test ride. This is a thread in case it helps anyone else attempting a similar conversion. 1. The biggest challenge was battery...

    Pre-conversion help/research

A quick update. I've had a busy weekend so haven't done much. The kit arrived and apart from the wrong 46T rather than 44T chainring being supplied (boxed up wrong in China by the look of things), it all looks good. The battery fits the space with the bag but the routing for the battery...

Parts ordered. I ended up getting what I think is a decent deal all things considered from a UK shop. There's no going back now! Thanks for all the help and fingers crossed for a smooth build.

    Pre-conversion help/research

After a lot of looking around I found a decent price for the motor from someone with UK stock but the price difference for the battery from the UK means I prefer to order from China (same model) which means I might as well order the motor kit from China too (as it works out cheaper with the gear...

Where did you buy your custom battery (and motor)?

That's the motor I'll be using. I don't think the 10 ah bottle type batteries will fit within the triangle either. Now to work put where to buy from. I'm happy to buy from a reputable supplier in China but also willing to pay a reasonable premium for UK supply but stock seems low. I'm not...

Measuring some more I've concluded the underside of the downtube is a no go. Given that she'll only want to go out in decent weather and not that often, I think I'll go for a bagged battery like the one in the earlier link. The cardboard cut out is based on the larger one which I think should...

    Pre-conversion help/research

Looking at the bike again this morning, I'll need to make fairly accurate templates of the available battery boxes and where the motor sits to see whether there's clearance under compression if placed on the underside of the downtube as it'll all depend on the taper of the box. I don't hold out...

    Pre-conversion help/research

I'd have to check the clearance very carefully in that position due to the wheel size and headtube angle i.e, with the forks fully compressed.

If you mean on top of the top tube then yes but I was worried about the weight up high.

In that I'm likely to run into additional problems? It's only 80mm travel in case that makes a difference.

Got you. The bottom of the downtube would be a possibility but very exposed to water and dirt. Otherwise a custom hard case but where to find one/have one built that I can be sure will fit... I could buy a different frame but if it can be done reasonably easily, this bike would be great, plus...

    Pre-conversion help/research

Ah, ok. The one in the link would fit and the larger one probably would just about but I can't be certain. Otherwise a custom box might be the only solution unless the battery could be properly protected from humidity and water by some kind of wrap.
