I rode my 26" mostly to the sorting office and back which I guess is like a short commute...about 4-5 miles round-trip... but in the warmer months I like to use it more recreationally and go for long rides in the countryside or to different villages around here in Worcestershire...

Interesting question.. since tyres are fairly cheap and probably the first thing to fail on a bike (and have the highest risk of accident/disruption to travel) I'd be inclined to change mine if they were showing significant signs of wear, or just already well worn if buying a used bike...
