    Should it be legal....?

amigafan you're a proponent of growing "common law, freeman on the land" stance I take it? :D I too like flecc have sympathy with this kind of approach he mentioned..i.e. have the laws, but just ignore them (acting responsibly) but if you end up in bother with the law you face the...

    Should it be legal....?

Although strictly speaking the letter of the law is to be followed, how far the e-bike law is likely to be enforced (and can be enforced) is a matter of debate. Many take the view the police have little to no interest in stopping e-bikes and checking them over. And how would they even know if...

    Should it be legal....?

Don't do that wurly that would be a sad loss if you were to leave. I know opinion is divided over this whole issue and its a hot potato on this forum which comes up and again and again. I guess there's merits to both sides of the argument and I agree in an ideal world we should have more freedom...

    Should it be legal....?

Scottyf you makes a compelling case for a relaxed approach. I wonder if BEBA knows how many accidents were attributed to illegal bikes or if they even monitor this. I think for motorists the risk is someone with an e-bike with high power motor doing 40-50mph and poor brakes hits their car and...

    Should it be legal....?

Does anyone know anyway how much it would cost and how practical it is to take a high powered e-bike and get it road registered? Even setting aside the CBT and getting a license and insurance etc. It seems that is what owners should be doing but they want to ignore it and just by-pass the law.

    Should it be legal....?

Scottyf: I hear what you're saying and in an ideal world where people could be trusted to act responsibly it would be fine to take a relaxed approach. Sometimes legislation is needed though to ENSURE our rights. For example, if we legislated to restrict the sale of e-bikes in some way to reduce...

    Should it be legal....?

You could take the argument or view that selling bikes which clearly fall out of the spec is unethnical business practice. Because these bikes put the owners, other motorists and pedestrians potentially at risk. Even if you put a disclaimer, why sell bikes you KNOW fall foul of the law? Note...

    Should it be legal....?

Good topic Indalo. My understanding is (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that a bike that spec'd outside the legal restrictions isn't illegal to sell or own. Someone might be using it on private property, although it's most likely they intend to use it on the road of course. I don't think you...

    bank loans for replacement batteries.

Hybrid seems a logical compromise or gap-filler, until such time as battery technologically radically improves... unless a new smaller type e-car emerges, leaner and fitter than the big e-cars they are proposing now..but I can't see those taking off mainstream..

    bank loans for replacement batteries.

Does it need a phased electricity supply perhaps like industrial appliances because of the amount of current needed? Flecc has painted a rather bleak future for the e-car industry unless they can radically get those battery costs down I can't see that ever being a viable and thriving market...

    bank loans for replacement batteries.

That's definitely Epson's business model.. when I bought my first inkjet from them, it cost £50 and included a full set of inks, which were at that time selling separately for £20-£25 for a set of 4. The price steadily increased and is now more like £30 odd for 4 cartridges. So I ended up...

    Marvao's marvellous hill climb.....

I always feel terribly guilty when I over-take unpowered's on the hills. But occasionally I have to hide a smug expression if its a Lycra and he's super fit and doing his best to keep ahead.

    MINI Folding Bike

Thanks Alan, I was searching instead of browsing by category.. duh. I found him now. No pix showing, but I can look up pix of the bike elsewhere to see it. What parts will I be tied to Dahon for if I go for this frame? Paul

Import Duty & VAT For Non EU Imports

No idea why Border Agency needed my name and address before they would answer a question about clearance fees. Perhaps they wanna check if I'm an illegal immigrant first :D

Import Duty & VAT For Non EU Imports

That's true I've noticed that with Royal Mail and Parcel Farce, but I've never yet had it happen to me with a private carrier.. Maybe they will follow the same approach though perhaps.

Import Duty & VAT For Non EU Imports

Clearance Fees I just wanted to add something to this which may be of interest to personal buyers.. No doubt many of you are aware of the high fees charged by Royal Mail and other carriers for "clearance" through Customs..usually ranging from £9 up to £15. On small value imports that go over...

    MINI Folding Bike

That's very good. I can't seem to find the TT frame on CH White, but its certainly an alternative option to Downtube as I want something simple and light as possible..probably single gear.
