Throttles and the other EU nations

Not that I'm suggesting anyone break the law or get in trouble here..but it would seem to me the best way to defeat these laws would be to use the speedict method of controlling your bike.. that basically gives you complete control over your motor..cruise, throttle-type speed and even the...

Throttles and the other EU nations

But do you think the legal defence would hold though, or does the law stipulate clearly that the throttle must max out at that 4 mph speed limit if used independent of pedalling? I guess that would be very easy for the police to determine if a bike is illegal or not, if it does. Just lift the...

    Throttles NOT illegal in EU

So basically the EU law on throttle is that it is intended to be used exactly like a PAS (pedal crank sensor assistance) feature with the controller? So if you had the throttle fully open and you stopped pedalling the motor cuts out instantly.. and once you hit 15.5mph of course. The throttle...

Throttles and the other EU nations

Does anyone have a "cruise control" button on their bikes? Heh. I noticed the controller I just bought for my next conversion does have this feature.. two wires which when connected (i.e. via a switch or button) will automatically put the motor into a pre-set cruising speed! I guess as...

    Left hand throttles:no thanks!

When I did my first conversion I actually put the throttle on the right side first... and it just didn't feel right at all.. I quickly realised left was the sane place!

Throttles and the other EU nations

Just to complicate matters a bit more... I seem to recall some provision in the EU law which DOES allow the throttle to be used independent of pedalling, but ONLY to 6km/h? if the user is PUSHING the bike, not riding it? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. So technically, you could argue (in...

    Throttles NOT illegal in EU

That's good to know then, it seems to make it even more difficult then for the police to do anything or even be willing to stop and check bikes.. unless they're obviously high powered ones (500W+) and travelling in a way which makes them clearly not ordinary bikes..

Throttles and the other EU nations

Seems to be a very grey area then.. as most bikes are 250W you should probably assume the EU law applies.. so if you ride with a throttle you're not going to be able to use the old law as any defence.. but this is all academic I think..for most of us, the risk of being involved with the law is...

Final limit at 250 watts EU ruling

I think you would have to check with your insurance company if you have a policy like I do for travel/product, public liability.. I would definitely not assume it's covered.. In fact, I'd say it's more than likely the insurance would not cover an event caused by illegal action or a vehicle...

    carry bag

Ian, if you mean a bag to put your folding bike in.. assuming it's 20" there's a good one sells for £22 with free delivery on Amazon which gets positive reviews...also folds up and stows under the saddle.

Throttles and the other EU nations

Or just ignore the silly EU law, carrying on using your road-legal 250W 15.5mph bike with throttle, and plead ignorance/cite old law.. in the unlikely event you do get stopped by a UK copper who knows the EU law and they enforce it on you.. what's worse could happen? Probably a small fine or...

18kg Folding Bike with Remote Control

Bizarre! I love the 60's chic and the "The Nobel prize of World Chinese Invention" ha. Remote control?? What the hell is that all about? Looks a bit dangerous. The bike itself though looks pretty good 16" wheels...18kg bit on the heavy side mind for 16"/24v, but then it does have a big basket.

Throttles and the other EU nations

Are you saying for sale/use in UK, or in EU? For UK we have the provision to use throttles still regardless of EU law, AFIAK.. for the EU, I think it wouldn't be illegal to either sell the bike with throttle attached or as an aftersale add-on..the law would come into effect if you used the...

Final limit at 250 watts EU ruling

That raises a very interesting point Kudo's and you're right these claims can easily go into millions if you leave a child permanently disabled. The situation could happen if you crash into a car or cause a car to hit someone as a result of your bike riding. As to the question of insurance.. I...

    Left hand throttles:no thanks!

My throttle is on the left side on my 26" and will be on the left on my Mezzo..simply because the gear shift is normally on the right and there's not enough space.. I would say is that it feels more natural to me on the left because for most people being right-handed, the right hand is what...

Final limit at 250 watts EU ruling

I see this law as more a "guideline" for the industry and I think we've covered this before in other threads...if you break the law and end up in trouble with the police, you face the full consequences of riding an unlicensed vehicle.. but for most (sensible) people it won't be an issue and the...

Throttles-please can you talk me through how you use the throttle on a typical ride.

When I first got into e-bikes I didn't touch the throttle ever and wasn't keen on riding that way, preferring PAS. However, after a knee injury and limits to how much I can pedal, I began using throttle and found it actually more convenient than PAS in general, because of the ability to start...

Final limit at 250 watts EU ruling

How is this law going to be enforced I wonder.. I can see all kinds of practical problems for the police.. I think we have said, unless you're acting like an idiot/drawing attention to yourself, or unlucky enough to be the cause of an accident.. it's unlikely the police will have the time/means...

Finally bought a smaller folder for conversion...

My BMS kit arrived today via FedEx. It had been opened at Customs and arrived with "Home Office - Border Agency - Inspected by" load of tape over it  That's the first one I've ever had inspected. What's going on with the Q100's motors!? They got it on the site as 250W-350W which I thought...
