Sounds like you are stil running the wrong phase/hall sensor combo, there are often several that work. I can't think of anything else that would make the motor behave like that.

I've no idea when they work, the std HD fits 68-73mm BB. On 73mm, I don't think there is enough thread for the second lock ring, so most apply Loctite thread lock on the first ring, this appears to work OK.

The chainstays look fine, but the oversized downtube will make the motor hang very low. You may also have to reroute those cables/brake line, although the front deraileur one can be removed.

I will have a look at the spare controllers I have, one I know has a lock connection on it. Next time cut the wires close to the board leaving a bit of insulation attached ;)
