Bafang mid drive. Clunky gear change only when power on.

On my torque sensor Bafang mid-drive with gear-sensor, I don't find the gear sensor too helpful: The gear-sensor works fine on the flat, but on even a slight incline where you have gravity working against you and you're losing momentum more quickly, I find it reacts too slowly and cuts the power...

    Electric Wheelbarrow

Yeah... you read that right! Bafang have introduced an Electric Motor/Wheelbarrow wheel derived from their e-bike hub motors. The guys at Grin Technologies don't miss a trick (he's also building an electric sailboat using tech derived from e-bike technology). This first video is about the...

Where can I get a compatible replacement handlebar display for a Pendleton Somerby ebike? (King Meter 790 LED)

Halfords changed a lot of things in 2018/2019 with most of their range - likely due to the ridiculous import tariffs the EU introduced on Chinese made bikes at that time. They certainly changed a considerable amount in terms of electrics - for example their battery supplier. I'd wager the...

Where can I get a compatible replacement handlebar display for a Pendleton Somerby ebike? (King Meter 790 LED)

It's not that weird. Early Somerby's - being the age they are - probably used Analogue comms. I'd guess Halfords transitioned to UART digital comms as that became more fashionable. My guess is that the latest Somerby's probably use CanBus, 2-wire digital which is de-rigour for any e-bike today -...

EBCO Eagle LSL50 flashing battery icon

If you do a simple google on "TranzX BL-05" a company comes up in Stockton and/or Durham who claim to have fixed exactly your problem. I have no idea if their claim is genuine. It seems odd to me if, as you say, the controller is in the motor, but there is another controller of sorts in the...

Help! Bafang kit fitted, pedal stripped thread.

Pedals are stamped R (right hand) and L (left hand). One is a clockwise thread, the other counter clockwise. If you put them in in reverse, the thread undoes and the pedal falls off. If you put them in correctly, the action of pedalling actually tightens the thread, not undoes it.

Where can I get a compatible replacement handlebar display for a Pendleton Somerby ebike? (King Meter 790 LED)

Yes, I understand, but it's now become clear why Halfords wanted to look at your bike first: As the forum gurus here have said, and King Meter themselves confirm, there seem to be three core versions of the 790: UART, CANBUS, or Analogue... either with or without "light" or "walk" options... so...

Where can I get a compatible replacement handlebar display for a Pendleton Somerby ebike? (King Meter 790 LED)

At the risk of stating the obvious, have you actually asked Halfords? Many of these Somerby e-bikes must - given they've been sold in their (10's of) thousands over many years - be of an age where the failure of membrane switches has got to be a very common problem - and a repair Halfords must...

Coyote Connect Fault - Turning Off

To me, that says it all. You're measuring surface voltage which collapses as soon as you load the battery. The screen on it's own uses a paltry amount of energy - the motor needs a good chunk. You could rig up 3 x 12v light-bulbs in series and attach to the battery and see if they stay on for...

    Which mid-drive would be best?

Okay, I'll humour you... From my perspective, I'd choose a BBS01. It's legal, reliable (although parts are plentiful), and powerful enough, and it's easily adjustable on-the-fly with a £20 programming cable and a free App. I have a Bafang M400, which is broadly similar except it uses torque...

    Chinese ebike speed deestriction

What Chinese bike? There are thousands of different Chinese e-bikes! Many use generic displays/controllers, some OEM. Sometimes, it's simply a case of changing parameters on the display panel. State/show your specific bike and the display. If it's do-able, someone here will likely know.

Help! Hi , Carrera vulcan battery charger flashing red.

I think you could try what @Sturmey suggests in post 3 - running a soldering iron over any joint that seems bad or dry. See if Halfords have any bad batteries for disposal - most fail through badly treated or knackered cells, not because of a faulty BMS. Universal BMS: I don't know what comes...

Help! Hi , Carrera vulcan battery charger flashing red.

So you've proven your charger isn't at fault and its connecting lead is fine. Halfords confirmed that too by substituting a different charger. So it's definitely a battery fault, but not a common fault that the BMS would normally report through oddly lit LED's. Handshaking is simply a cynical...

Help! I'd like to get Fiido D4S

Yes, adjust brakes as you say, but you need to repeat that from time to time as the right pad wears and the gap increases again. Don't squeeze the lever too hard though or the right pad will end up always rubbing against the rotor. It's a knack you soon get the hang of it. It's only very...

Help! I'd like to get Fiido D4S

I've a Fiido D11 - different bike, but exactly the same Fiido brakes. My understanding is the pads are sintered/harder than usual resin - more prone to squeal than resin. Fiido's callipers only apply pressure from the left pad - the right pad distance from the rotor can be adjusted with a hex...

Securing eBikes in the back of a panel van

For a while, I used this type of fork-fixing block screwed into the floor (not this actual brand). It worked very well, but it became a pain due to the bike always being in a fixed position and having to remove and also store the front wheel separately. I reverted back to bungee cords which to...

    e-Bike mechanics

Are you looking to employ a mechanic, or a shop who can do it for you? A friend told me about this shop in NW1 not far from where I used to work who specialise in selling electric cargo bikes, but take on all types of electric bikes for servicing/repair - even do a collection/repair/return...

EBCO Eagle LSL50 flashing battery icon

The Eagle is one of those TranzX bikes that pre-dates CanBus diagnostics. My local Ebco dealer said/suggested there were ways of calibrating/setting those earlier bikes by combinations of key-presses. If you think it just needs resetting, I'd think your best bet would be to contact Ebco...

EBCO Eagle LSL50 flashing battery icon

Are you sure? If your battery is the original, it's likely at least 8+ years old, more likely 10 (the bike dates from 2010). The battery only ever had a service life of 500 cycles when new. The 42v you measure may just be surface voltage, which collapses when you switch the bike on. If you can...
