Storing battery outside in winter - what insulation?

Don't charge near an escape route, and near freezing I've read you should reduce the controller current if possible. As said a fire needs a cause and the BMS should protect against any misuse. So in theory the culprits ought to be either storing a full battery unused for an exceptionally long...

Mizanur Rahman death: Coroner calls for e-bike battery standards

This. For cell protection to be reliable it must be inside the battery, not reliant on user training or on protocols like plug shapes or stickers. Which is not to say that those can't improve safety. With the market buying on price and scant product details and the brands pushing proprietary...

    Checking Multimeter Calibration at Home

If this is the XL830L the 200V range only resolves to 0.1V. It's best to calibrate as near as you can get to the voltage you want to measure and using the same range, but I haven't found a reference above 10V off the shelf.

Moving a rack battery to a different part of a frame

If you did want to stick with the rack battery there are plenty of crossbar bags made for cell packs, you could take the pack out and it would be a fair bit smaller, but that's for fair weather and gentle use. I'd sooner bungee the case in proven place on the downtube just to try it out, and...

In the DC 30V to 60V range the spec'd accuracy for the OWON OW18E or Farnell's similar Multicomp MP730624 is good at 0.1%+2 but there are reports the datalogging is hard to use.

Well known brands are a help but haven't always guaranteed quality, so we need to measure. For a spare charger the OEM one could act as reference for a cheap meter and at the right voltage. My meters aren't linear enough to check with a low voltage reference...

    > That test is for cells, not a battery with BMS. You've a knack for finding fair points that are easily overlooked :) But assuming the cells don't go madly out of balance.... what might make the results differ / how? The "PSU" is a CV & CC regulator, some have guards such as Ah limits. They...

Yes it's the older version of this and the one I received sets voltage accurately. https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005001488070904.html https://www.directcalibrationsolutions.co.uk Calibration can be pricey but I got quick tests over a narrow range and Chris gave a very fair discount.

80%: what would be proof, if not evidence? Here they report test results from BMZ, and my adjustable supply cost £35 much the same as a charger. https://pushevs.com/2018/04/27/battery-charging-full-versus-partial 100% agree that it's great that people are trying to get the details on what's...

True but it's also an investment in safety necessitated by the BMS's balancing threshold being unknown or too high. If you can build a battery with an external balancing port life gets a lot easier. What do they do in China? Are there unbranded charging stations, do they use generic...

    > So how do you decide if battery B can be effectivly charged by charger C ? As others have said the right target voltage matters a lot e.g. 10S/13S/14S x LiIon/LiFe/etc, and the current too to some extent, which is what led to this suggestion...

Ripple's a good point, if the battery can't discharge through the charger presumably it goes on charging to the peak voltage including ripple, albeit increasingly slowly. This might be a concern if float charging, which isn't the usual way to charge lithium batteries... although if left...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126010252383 The cells are very underutilised and checked for balance from time to time. They're charged with a constant current power supply, its ripple can be 300mV but has a narrow spiky waveform so there's little energy in it. By avoiding conditions where...

These are a couple of handheld multimeters. The cheaper one's accuracy varies which is bad news at values away from the voltage reference. Then again the pricier meter's less accurate. I set the charger 0.5V lower to err on the safe side and I'll be treating myself to a better meter...

I used an Andra 40 rim and Sapim Strong spokes with head washers on a Shengyi DGW22C motor. Grin's calculator worked a charm, I measured the rim carefully and the rest fell into place as shown. The wheel's beginning to creak and needs retensioning after 1900 miles.

"Conversion kits to blame in 40% of ebike fires, says London Fire Brigade"

Although to be fair you can smother a chip pan fire and it takes longer to release its energy. Agreed but ignorance and abuse probably take first place as causes, like indoor charging, unsuitable fast chargers or twist and tape bikes. Good advice so spread the word. Overcharging is a clear...
