My name is ..... And I'm new here.....

Can you say more about gradients and lengths of hills that need to be tackled? This is likely to be the main issue for the trike.

My name is ..... And I'm new here.....

Narrow down what you want to do and solutions will flow! There seem to be two queries here, your mountain bike and your friend's Kettwiesel trike, which is a 'delta'. Mountain biking trails need a mid motor. A mountain bike on the road will likely do fine with a hub, but more info about your...

    New Chinese "500 Wh/kg" battery

It's 'only' a doubling in capacity, so not an absurd step size, cost is no object in aviation R&D sector, and CATL are big. I'll give them a cautious thumbs up for the numbers, whilst not forgetting that is still only 4% of the energy density of petrol...

    Chainring size advice.

If you are ghost pedalling on the flat then it almost doesn't matter how low you go. You are the power up the steepest hills, so maybe go all the way down to 28 or 30 or 32 depending on what is available in the right fitting. Alternatively change the motor to one capable of managing the hills.

    Legal Pitfalls

@flecc's writings on legal questions (a) have the benefit of very long experience (b) have the tone of someone with a legal background, so I take great comfort from them. When I get around to a conversion I will keep myself happy by staying below 25kph assisted, keeping motor parameters to no...

    TSD2 range ?!

In low assist on a gravel style bike with touring gear and trailer and all up weight 130 to 150kg, I average 10Wh per mile in fairly gentle terrain, and I am almost all ths time below the cutoff speed. So if it is just you and the trike with a fair amount of time above the cutoff in gentle...

Help! Would like have a professional consultant please

With 'constantly charged' systems like a car's battery, the system voltage is the 'fully charged whilst under charge' voltage of 14 plus a few tenths volts, just to complexify further!

Do you leave your display attached to your ebike, when leaving it locked in a public place?

I've attached three decoy displays, so in most cases they won't pick the right one, or better still, will take so long to make their minds up I'll be back in time to nab them!

Topping up a lithium battery with a second battery

Yes, 1.8A at maximum 42V is only 76W, so even allowing for modest efficiency in both inverter and charger it should be fine. Just keep an eye on it the first time to check nothing odd happens.

Topping up a lithium battery with a second battery

In my pre-solar days, I used a 150W Sterling Power pro power q quasi sine wave inverter to power my Shimano slow 1.8A charger with no issues. Mine was £15 in a sale on the Sterling Power website, cheap as packaging was damaged. New price is about £60 to £75 these days. I wouldn't use a cheap...

    New seasons adventures underway

My first solar trip of the year passed off successfully on the anniversary of my first ever solar trip. A short two day lap of Glencoe, just 179km taking advantage of a couple of glorious days before another week of grey! Everything still works except my DIY datalogger, which spent too long...

    Clueless

The hill climbing ability of a lower end mid drive can be improved by upgrading the drive train to give lower bottom gear. If you buy and are disappointed then wait until you need a new cassette and chain and go to 11 or 12 speed with a 50 or 51T low gear. I've gone from 11-36 to 11-51 with 38T...

    Help! Commuter e-bike

22 miles per day is serious commuting, so clearly you are a fairly fit rider. You slightly run the risk of easing the hills but not necessarily improving your journey time, as an ebike will be somewhat heavier, will only help up to 25 km/h and some will not pedal without resistance above that...

Has anyone heard of or tried Toseven mid drive?

I would guess it has an integral three speed hub gear, but I don't know for sure.

Sram Ex1 cheaper replacement cassette alternatives?

My recent move to 11 speed is for the summer half of the year. Come autumn I'll put the old, cheaper 9 speed back on. I have to swap derailleur, shifter, cassette and chain as a set. If you want to run cheaper components that's what you need to do. They are designed to work together, so they will.

What does the trade use ...

DIY-wise, if I needed to do this, I would make a temporary crossbar, perhaps from two 2x1 battens with recesses to suit the frame members and a few bolts or screws to clamp them together and some protective padding.

Sram Ex1 cheaper replacement cassette alternatives?

If Shimano fits, you could look at M5100 11 speed. Shifter and derailleur about £30 each, cassette often seen at £49.99 on offer, SRAM chain is cheapest option, I buy multiple cheap 114 link chains and use one for the extra links needed. Four chains will give three long enough chains for about...
