A manufacturing company with a London base has tapped into the knowledge offered by seasoned electric bike experts, to produce an electric bike called the Emu.
The Emu Electric Bike Co Ltd is an offshoot of Delbanco Meyer & Co Ltd. Established in 1936, the company is steeped in history. Delbanco Meyer & Co is more famous for being the largest bristle merchants in the world, but recent decades has seen the firm move into textiles, property development and now, right on cue for modern consumer demands…an electric bike.
The Emu’s mantra is ‘Roam Free’, latching on to the bird’s nomadic instinct of travelling great distances on foot, with those strong legs also providing the ability to sprint at impressive speeds of over 30mph on leg power alone.
For the rest of us, a 250w motor can also equip us to explore the world around us however. The Emu is available in both step-through and crossbar, both with a price tag of £999 to slot neatly just under the Cycle to Work Scheme limit to offer a tax break for commuters.
The company’s brightly-coloured Emu was recently on show at the Norwich’s city centre Forum.
The company say: “Emu gives you a feeling of wellbeing and liberation that is good for the soul as well as the wallet.”
The Emu is the result of a 5-year design process, according to the company, partly to provide an alternative to clogged city traffic but also to capitalise on a growing industry.
The company told Pedelecs: “We believe the bicycle is one of man’s greatest ever inventions and the e-bike is arguably the greatest improvement since the Penny Farthing. We have sourced the best quality components including Shimano 7-Gear Nexus hub, V-brakes and Samsung SDI batteries as standard, all with a 2 year warranty and have also included a USB port to charge your mobile phone while you cycle.”
