The Eden Project in Cornwall will be hosting an electric bike show from Saturday, April 20, until Wednesday, April 24, giving visitors the chance to test out the latest trend in cycling.
The event will showcase some of the best new bikes designed to give cyclists an extra boost when pedaling, which is perfect for tackling the hills and inclines of Cornwall.
Electric bikes are conventional bikes that have an electric motor and added battery. When the cyclist pedals on an electric bike, the motor helps them to go further than they would under their own steam.
Twelve companies will be showing off their electric assisted bike ranges, including local firm Ocean Cycle from Torpoint and Falmouth-based ICE trikes, whose recumbent bikes allow the rider to cycle in a reclined, comfortable position.
People will have the opportunity to test ride the bikes from 10am until 4.30pm each day during the five-day show. Novices will be able practice their pedaling in the arena at the heart of Eden’s clay pit, while seasoned cyclists can take to one of Eden’s paths.
In addition, there will be a guided tour on Saturday, April 20 taking place at 11am and 2:30pm. The tour will follow the trail to Wheal Martyn and back again, allowing people the chance to explore the beauty of the local area. To book a place on one of the tours, call 07538 639 901.
Eden, along with Wheal Martyn, Sustrans and a variety of local businesses, agencies and community members, have come together to form the Clay Trails Partnership to make sure that the trails are available to cyclists, walkers and horse-riders alike.
Janine Kelk, Eden’s Sustainable Transport Coordinator, said: “I meet lots of people who’d like to cycle more, either to cut costs, cut emissions or to get more exercise, but aren’t sure where to start.
“The new breed of bikes on display at the show demonstrates that an extra boost up hills can give everyone the confidence to get cycling, whatever level of ability they have. With no tax or insurance to pay for, electric bikes are efficient and affordable too. Also, if you cycle to Eden, you can benefit from reduced ticket entry.”
