Last year around 180,000 electric bikes were sold in Holland bringing the total to 600,000. In March alone, sales jumped by over 31% compared to 2010. The big increase is welcome news for IBD’s with e-bikes now making up to 44% of their total turnover.
With total turnover remaining flat (for pedelecs and non-powered bikes), the level of discounting by supermakets, big box retailers and discounters drove down average prices for bicycles. The strength of electric bike sales once again came to the rescue of the dutch IBD’s.
