Dutch cycle industry figures from RAI reported an increase in overall revenue from cycle sales last year, fuelled by strong growth in electric bike sales.
The trade industry group noted both the expansion in the range of e-bikes on sale as well as the fact that “almost one in three” (28%) of new bikes purchased is now an electric bike, resulting in a ‘whopping’ increase of 23.6% of e-bike units sold in 2015. In addition, 3,500 speed pedelecs were sold in 2015.
Although there was a decrease of 6.4% in pedal cycle sales compared to the previous year’s trading figures, the higher price tag of the 276,000 electric bikes sold in 2015 ensured increased revenue to €899 million for the cycle trade last year. The average retail price of a bicycle was up 8.5% to €1058.
