Early figures for 2015 electric bike sales in the Netherlands show the country’s love affair with electric bikes isn’t about to end any time soon.
63,610 electric bikes were sold in Q1 of 2015, an increase of 23.5% on sales during the same period of January to April in 2014 (51,510 e-bikes sold), according to Bike EU.
A continuation of that trend would see total sales for 2015 reaching 265,000 units, representing 25% of the cycle market.
The average price paid for a pedelec in that period was €2,065 (roughly £1,470) and around 2.4% higher than last year. 2015’s increases also come on top of a 16% increase in e-bikes sold in 2014.
Official industry figures from RAI also show an increase in speed pedelec sales in 2015 (legally classified as mopeds in the Netherlands). The first three months of 2015 show sales rose by 4 percent compared to the first quarter last year, up to 8,478 units.
In the Netherlands, over 85% of the population own at least one bike, according to the industry association.
