Now in its third year – and a popular event in the UK electric bike calendar – the World Championships returns to Bristol this weekend.
The World Championships, famous for those working in the world of electric bikes pitting their racing skills and bikes against one another, also stages a second electric bike race up the Park Street hill, in which anyone with a UK road legal e-bike can take part.
The event also forms part of the BIG Green Week Festival with the ‘BIG Bike Day’ finale providing cycling fun for all the family on 22nd June this year.
Electric bike manufacturers will again showcase and demonstrate e-bikes on the day, for the public to try out an e-bike for themselves around City Hall. Over 1,800 customers have tried an electric bike for themselves on the try out track over the past two years.

BIG Green Week
Big Green Week, running from 14th to 22nd June, is the UK’s festival of eco ideas, art and entertainment with over 50,000 visitors enjoying two weekends of free family entertainment and nine days of inspiring talks, workshops, art, music, poetry, comedy and films. Bristol will be European Green Capital in 2015, the first ever UK city to win this award.
The 2014 BIG Bike Day will include:
Bristol’s Biggest Bike Ride – this is the UK’s largest free non-competitive cycling event, attracting over 8,000 families, who can cycle on four routes of different lengths along closed city roads, including under the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge. Setting off from Bristol’s Harbourside in the morning, the rides will return to College Green over lunchtime to enjoy the cycling related activities.
College Green
Will be full all day with free bike and family entertainment, including the electric bike try out zone, bike ride stands and activities, cycling cinema, and children’s entertainment provided by Make Sunday Special, the Mayor of Bristol’s monthly city center street openings for family entertainment.
Park Street
Will be closed from midday, first for the Atmosphere Electric Bikes World Championship races, and then for other bicycle races (Bristol’s Mayor has challenged London’s Mayor to a race). There will also be an Extreme Mountain Bike show on throughout the afternoon.
