to shim or not to shim?

New bike on the way. Seat post diameter is 30.9. I have a Suntour NCX of size 27.2. Very happy with that seat post. The question is, do I shim the ncx using a Cane Creek shim directly between sizes to fit the bike, or stick with a non suspension seat post until I can afford a cane creek thudbuster? The NCX only seems to come in 27.2 and 31.6 but nothing in between.

Do people think I run a risk with my frame warranty with a good quality metal shim (like the cane creek one)?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I'm a fairly big guy and I've used a shim since I bought my Suntour seat post last year and for many hundreds of off road miles, thousands if you include other bikes I've shimmed in the past.
A suspension post should reduce stress on the down tube so a frame failure in that area would be less likely.
Shims are standard practice so I shouldn't think it would affect frame warranty but we only find these things out when we make a claim.

Dave.

Just a further thought, it may be best to wait until you get the bike before ordering the shim, my last bike, a Trek, had a slightly different diameter than the one on the specification, probably a printers error.

Wallasey, Wirral.
I'm still waiting for my ncx post to arrive James but you've got me worried now if the one that's specced at 31.6mm is actually that size or designed to fit tubes of that size so will it fit the Oxygen mtb seat tube..? Won't be long till I find out..!

Don't worry too much, I was getting confused between threads on the Oxygen and ones on the cube reaction that I've ordered.

I wanted a stem for my handlebars on my QWIC e7 folder. The supplied item sits right on top with no forward reach. Had me sitting up like a begging dog! So, I hacksawed the handlebar clamp clean off at the top and shimmed on an 80mm forward reach 'ahead stem'. Cut with shears from a biscuit tin. Wrapped around it took up the difference of about 1mm. Has never moved in 400kms of use. Cannot be seen. It is possible to buy brass shim. Years ago, a cycle engineer told me coffee or biscuit tin works just a well.
